Ranger golf competes at Stanley County Invitational

The Hill City High School Ranger Golf team traveled to Ft. Pierre for the Stanley County Invitational hosted at the Dunes Golf Course last Friday. The Rangers got their second team tournament victory in a row by edging out the Wall Eagles by four strokes, 213-217.
David Hubacher also took home the individual title after firing a scorching two under 71. Breylon Rahn followed in sixth with a 74, Adolph Tyler was 11th with a 78, Zane Messick was 15th with a 79, Leo Daiss was 16th with an 80 and Max Rupert was 30th with a 91.

Rangers putt past Wall, finish first

Despite a busy week and tough windy conditions, the Rangers golf team capped off a week of play with a first-place tournament finish. 
Golfers had a whirlwind week participating in four total tournaments in just six days.  

Record smashing meet in Sturgis

Hill City took three of the top eight places in the boys 800 at the 2023 Black Hills Classic in Sturgis April 29.
 Brandon Escalante took fourth place with Luke Rupert  finishing fifth and Tate Grabow in seventh.
There were several Ranger athletes who outperformed themselves at the meet. 
Leighton Aves set a personal record in his second place 1600 race, running 4:35:45.
Devin Buehler also set a personal record of 6-1 in the high jump, finishing first.

Rangers take advantage of every opportunity

The Pierre American Legion Relays was postponed to April 24 due to weather. However, since students are currently doing state standardized testing, head coach Joe Noyes did not feel it was appropriate to drive to Pierre.
Instead, Belle Fourche moved the 2023 Northern Hills Invite to April 24, and the Rangers were able to compete at this meet. 
“I specifically was really pleased with our athletes,” said Noyes. “There’s typically four event groups—throws, jumps, sprints and distance—and we had PRs (Personal Records) in all four event groups. 

Rangers golfers hit the greens

Golf season is finally in full swing after weather postponements. 
The team played in the Class B Classic in Mitchell at the Lakeview Golf Course April 24.
The Rangers went up against over 20 of the top teams in the state, in addition to a full field of 95 golfers.  
Coach Josh Daiss was happy with the team’s play and the team score of 261 and a 10th place tie finish. 

Tracks season takes off

After three meets were canceled due to weather, the Hill City High School Ranger track team finally competed in its first meets of the season. However, things still drifted into the extremes with three meets in five days and a 40-degree difference in temperature between the meets.
Despite the dramatic shifts in weather, head coach Joe Noyes said the athletes performed really well. Between the three meets various students made personal records, and there were several individual and relay wins. 

Rangers lose to Broncs

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, the Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team faced the Belle Fourche Broncs for the Class A Region 8 Quarterfinal. The teams were evenly matched, but the Broncs took the win 69-61. Both teams ended the game with a record of 9-12. 
That completed the season for the Ranger boys. 
Coach Laramie Harvey said, “Overall, it was a good season. And a great group of people, players and coaches to spend so much time with.” 

Girls vie at state

The Hill City girls wrestling team traveled to Rapid City to compete in the state championship last weekend. It is the first time the district has sent girls’ to a state meet.
Daisy Munoz competed well but lost a championship round match by fall (1:15) to Maya Erickson of Brookings. Munoz was also defeated by Gracie Delgado of Dakota Valley  by fall at 2:34.

After postponing due to weather, the Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team traveled to the Custer Armory on Feb. 23 where the Ranger girls faced the Wildcats for the Girls Basketball Class A Region 8 Quarterfinal. 
The Ranger girls played a strong game with a 76.5 free throw percentage in comparison with Custer's 66.7 free throw percentage.

On Feb. 14 the Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team had a home game against the Custer Wildcats. The Rangers beat the Wildcats once already this season and brought home yet another win. The game ended 43-33 in the Rangers’ favor. 
Next up, the Ranger girls faced the Wall Eagles for a home game Feb. 17. The Rangers took the lead in the first quarter, but the Eagles came back strong.
