Golf swings into season

The Hill City golf team finished in fifth place in the opening golf tournament at the Elks Golf Course in Rapid City. The tournament featured nine teams and according to coach Josh Daiss it was a good first tournament with a lot of young kids who contributed to the team’s success.
This year there are 10 golfers on the Rangers’ team—nine boys  and one girl.
Hill City usually attracts many golfers to its team. Daiss thinks perhaps it is because golf is a game parents encourage kids  to play, and one they can play their entire lives.

Ranger athletes score well at Douglas

The Hill City Rangers were back in action at the Douglas High School Early Bird Track and Field Varsity Invitational on April 2. According to head coach Joe Noyes, "It went really well." The students showed up ready to work hard and push each other.

Rangers start track season strong

The Hill City Rangers had an excellent first outing at the Comet Classic Invitational Track and Field meet March 25. 
Hill City took the top three spots in the girls 800-meter run. Abby Cutler finished with a time of 2:31:38. Lillie Ross was right behind her with a time of 2:37:62 while Natalie Hanka took third place in the competition.  Cutler again took second place in the 1,600-meter run.
The female Rangers also did well in the hurdle competition. Abby Siemonsma and Anna Dean took the top two spots in the 300-meter hurdles.

Run for the Rangers is March 27

The 14th annual 2022 Run for the Rangers three-mile run and walk takes place March 27 at 1 p.m. 
All proceeds go to fund Hill City high school scholarships. 
Participants can still register by going online at getmeregistered.com/run
fortherangers or  in person at Granite Sports. Registration is  $30. 
The fun-filled event is capped by a post-race awards ceremony and a chance to win over $10,000 in door prizes from race sponsors. 

Ranger boys finish their season

After a short break, the Hill City High School boys basketball team headed for regional games. The first Region 8A basketball game was held on Mar. 1 at Belle Fourche High School as the Ranger boys faced off against the Broncs. 
Although the Ranger boys had some losses in the previous games, they were ready. The game as a whole was very close. The Rangers were down by 10 in the first quarter. However, “Our boys to their credit just grinded out the rest of the game,” said coach Laramie Harvey. 

Davis places eighth at state tourney

Tanner Davis, above left, wrestles at the State B wrestling tournament in Sioux Falls over the weekend. The senior placed eighth overall in the 220-pound weight class after pinning his first round opponent in 1:41. He also won by fall over Jacob Novak of Kimball-White Lake in 3:54 in Consolation Round 2. Davis completed his high school wrestling career with a season record of 18-8. He was the only one of the three members of his team to qualify for the state tournament.

After completing their regular season the Hill City High School girls basketball team headed for the regional games. The first Region 8A basketball game was held Feb. 24 at Gins Gym as the Ranger girls faced the Custer Wildcats for the third time this season. The outcome of the game remained uncertain since these teams have been evenly matched this year with the Wildcats winning the first game by one and the Rangers winning the second game by three. 

Davis places second at region meet

After placing second in the 220-pound weight class at last weekend’s regional meet Hill City’s Tanner Davis is going to the State Class B wrestling championships. Davis will be the sixth seed at the championships and has a 17-6 record. 
The road to the state championship will require Davis to first take out Herman Frisvold of Lemmon-Mcintosh.  Frisvold has a record of 23-20. The two seniors most recently were on the mat together at the Black Hills Classic where Davis easily defeated Frisvold in 45 seconds. 

Rangers face tough games this week

Hill City High School boys basketball coach Laramie Harvey said the Rangers had a couple losses last week that were with closely matched teams, but things just weren’t going their way. They were back-to-back games with Douglas at home on Thursday night, falling to the Patriots 67-58.
“Douglas made quite a few of their three-pointers which made a big difference in the game,” said Will Walther, a Ranger team member.

Ranger girls wrapping up regular season

The Hill City Ranger girls are getting down to the finish line of the regular basketball season after a week of two wins and a loss.  After beating Lead-Deadwood Monday night last week they came up with an easy win against Douglas, 44-24, enabling them to work through the plans they had practiced.
The game with Lakota Tech was a tough one for the Lady Rangers, which they knew going into the game.
