Rangers defeat ’Diggers

In a double-header with the boys team at Lead-Deadwood on Monday night, the Hill City High School girls basketball team showed its strength on the court. Their defense was strong and kept the Golddiggers scoreless in the first and third quarter and won the game. 
“We played as a team on Monday night. We played together and were not just playing as friends, but like a family. We had really good defense that seemed to stop them,” said Lillie Ross, one of the Lady Rangers.

Boys snatch win in Lead

Monday night the Hill City Rangers traveled to Lead and the boys came back with a win after they were down at the end of the first half. Coach Laramie Harvey said the boys struggled in the first half against a team that “packs it in” right out of the gates, and this forced the Rangers to shoot from the outside.
He said sometimes the shots don’t fall, and that was the case in the first half as the boys were down 21-19. They came out of the locker room after halftime with renewed vigor and put away the Golddiggers early with a win of 60-34.

Davis places second in home meet

Tanner Davis took second place at this weekend’s Black Hills Classic Wrestling Tournament in Hill City.
“It was a bittersweet taste wrestling at home,” said Davis.“ I was so excited yet sad knowing it’s my last time wrestling on the Smokey mat!”

Girls win two, fall to Custer

With three games in five days, the Hill City High School girls basketball team had a tight week with some close games.
“Last week was a big week for us,” said coach Wade Ginsbach. “Anytime you have three games in a week you got to kind of take every game for what it’s worth and not worry about the next game.”
First, the Ranger girls played the Sturgis Brown Scoopers Jan. 25. The team played well and came out on top, 52-43. 

Boys lose two, beat Kadoka Area

The Hill City High School boys basketball team is practicing hard after a busy week with three games in five days. There were some low points, but also some high points as they continue to progress in the season with a current record of 5-7.
First, they played the Sturgis Brown Scoopers Jan. 25. According to coach Laramie Harvey, “It was a rough game. We didn't come out ready to go, and we're never able to get the energy level up to where it needs to be.” As a result, the Rangers lost 59-42.

Davis places third at Winner meet

Hill City’s Tanner Davis placed third at The Winner Invitational last week. 
Davis had a bye in the first round before defeating Jay Wright by fall 3:14 into the match in the quarterfinals. The semifinals were won by decision, with Davis losing to Levi Wieman of Parker. Davis went on to win the match for third place, defeating Aiden Schoenhard  of Mobridge-Pollock by decision. 
Davis called the matches hard but was overall optimistic about his performance.
“I’m learning so much every difficult match I have,” he said.

The Hill City High School boys basketball team had a busy week with three games in four days. However, after their recent successes, the team came ready to win. They started by claiming a win against the Belle Fourche Broncs 53-50 on Tuesday, Jan. 18.
“Tuesday night against Belle Fourche was a big win for our kids. They played well. They played hard,” said coach Laramie Harvey. “They did some things very well, and that’s kind of what enabled them to win that game.”

Girls defeat Sundance

The Hill City High School girls basketball team cruised past the Bulldogs of Sundance, Wyo., with a 45-14 win this weekend. This puts the girls at 6-3 on a season that is half over.
The girls have a tough road game ahead traveling to Rapid City Christian to take on the 7-4 Lady Comets. The Lady Comets have a fairly young team, with three eighth graders and two freshmen. They have no players over 5-11. 
The Rangers are coming off a four-game winning streak. Their last loss was by one point to Vermillion on New Year’s Eve. 

Davis wins BHC crown

Hill City wrestling team member Tanner Davis is moving full steam ahead in his quest to bring home a wrestling title.
Competing in the 285 weight class at the Black Hills Conference Tournament at Douglas High School this past week, Davis pinned freshman Matthew Medina at 1:10 to take first place in his weight class. He was also selected Black Hills Classic All Conference.
“It was a super fun day,” Davis said. He wrestled twice and considered the event a “cake walk” with no really challenging matches. 

Rangers boys are bouncing back

At first it appeared the Hill City High School boys basketball team was off to a discouraging start. After all, the first three games against the Red Cloud Crusaders, the New Underwood Tigers and the Hot Springs Bison were all lost by the Rangers. However, the turn of a new year appears to have brought a new vigor to the team. 
Although they lost a game against the Spearfish Spartans 85-60  Jan. 5, the next day proved a different story. At home in the Gins Gym, the Rangers claimed a win against the Edgemont Moguls 59-41.
