Rangers look for first win

The Hill City Rangers football team lost to the Beresford Watchdogs 55 -0.
Coach Eckert continues to praise his team which has been plagued by injuries. 
“This group of boys has been amazing,” said Eckert. “They continue to put forth effort and respond  positively to each event despite the lackluster outcome. These boys have been through the gamut. This group of boys has overcome the adversity that’s been presented to them in only a way that we would say real men can.” 

No break for girls during homecoming week

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team has back-to- back matches this week. 
The Rangers play at home against the Lady Scotties of Phillip Tuesday and travel to play a conference match against Rapid City Christian Thursday. 
“We are coming off of a big weekend in Sioux Falls, where we played teams all top-ranked in their respective classes,” said Coach Wathen.   
The team played several teams in Sioux Falls at the Sanford Pentagon Invitational where they lost to O’Gorman, Brandon Valley and Northwestern. 

Football team scores big despite loss

Despite another loss, the Hill City Rangers football team got on the board at its most recent game against Lead-Deadwood.
Tanner Davis ran into the endzone with about four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Devin Buehler then completed a two-point conversion pass to freshman Grayson Rahn to give the Rangers an 8-0 lead. 
Lead-Deadwood responded on their next drive and the game resulted in a 48-8 loss, leaving the Rangers with a 0-4 record on the season.

Rangers fall to Comets

The Hill City High School football team lost its third game of the season and is still looking for its first points of the season, but head coach Brett Eckert said the 36-0 loss suffered by the team last Friday against Rapid City Christian was a good growing experience for the team.
“We definitely progressed from two weeks prior. We got better in a lot of areas,” Eckert said. “We blocked better up front, defensively we pursued the ball better and played more aggressively. With being as young as we are we just strive to get better everyday.”

Volleyball team remains undefeated

The Hill City High School volleyball team continued its winning streak with wins last week over Spearfish and Belle Fourche. The team crushed Belle Fourche Saturday  25- 18, 25-10, 25-12. Earlier in the week the  team defeated Spearfish 25-19, 25-13, 25-14.
Junior Macey Wathen led the team with nine kills during the Belle Fourche victory, while senior Abby Siemonsma had 19 assists. Freshman Sydney Wathen had 19 digs during the match, which leaves the Rangers volleyball team with a 7-0 record for the season. 

Football team forfeits

The Hill  City Rangers varsity football team forfeited its most recently scheduled game last Friday against McCook Central-Montrose.
“Due to injuries we were unfortunately unable to play last week at all,” head coach Brett Eckert said. The Rangers are slated to play Rapid City Christian  for their home opener on Sep 3. 
“We are hopeful that we will be able to get back on the field this Friday night but it just depends how our players recover from injuries,” Eckert said.

Volleyball undefeated

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team is starting the season off right. 
Undefeated, the team won the Custer Invitational Tournament playing four matches total. Stat leaders for the tournament include Marie Peckosh in aces with a total of 20. Macey Wathen showed her prowess with 43 kills. Sydney Wathen displayed defensive skills with 38 digs while Abby Siemonsma led the team in assists with 82.
The girls travel to Spearfish on Thursday, Aug. 31, to take on the Spartans followed by another away match Sept. 4 against Belle Fourche.
 

Volleyball season begins

Hill City High School Volleyball team kicked off its season Aug. 24 against Custer.
“We are looking forward to another opportunity to play a regular season and positively represent our school and community through volleyball,” said  coach Lindsy Wathen. The team has 26 girls, which is similar to previous years. 
Wathen thinks the region and conference will keep the team on its toes but that the team’s  “toughest competition will be on the road at our tournaments in Sioux Falls, Alliance (Neb.) and Mellette.”

Fall sports gearing up

Hill City School District is once again asking for contributions for Ranger Club registration. It is $25 for individual or $40 for family.
The Ranger Club is a weekly email for upcoming events, last week’s results, and changes in schedules for all middle school and high school activities.
Last year the Ranger Club purchased all new middle school track uniforms and shorts. This year it has purchased middle school volleyball and basketball jerseys with membership fees.

Cutler brings home two medals

Hill City freshman Abby Cutler brought home a pair of medals—including a silver in the 3200—from the South Dakota Class A State Track Meet last weekend in Spearfish.
Cutler’s second place finish in the 3200 came in at a time of 11:42.19, while she was also sixth in the 1600 at a time of 5:24.07.
As a team, the Rangers finished in 16th place with 17 team points. West Central won the team championship with 66 points, followed by Custer with 53 points and Hamlin at 40 points.
