Girl wrestlers fourth in Hot Springs

The Hill City girls wrestling team finished fourth at the Holiday Extravaganza in Hot Springs Dec 15.
Tiara Faehnrich placed first in her 138 pound weight class, scoring 21  points for the girls. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, she won by fall over  in the semifinal match beating Hallie Fuller (Lingle-Ft. Laramie-Southeast) at 2:21. Faehnrich  then beat Teagan Vining of St Thomas More by major decision.
Head coach Tanner Davis said Faehnrich has a great winners mentality.

The Hill City High School boys basketball team had a successful week on the court. 
During the game against the New Underwood Tigers, the Rangers came out strong for the first quarter. Then, in the second and third quarters head coach Laramie Harvey said the boys had “a little bit of a rough stretch.”
“We weren’t as efficient offensively or defensively in the second and third quarters as we were in the first quarter,” said Harvey.

The Hill City High School girls basketball team hit the court to face the New Underwood Tigers Dec. 14. 
According to head coach Anna Eckert, “The girls played good defense against New Underwood, which contributed to being able to come up with the win. Our communication and help side defense were huge contributing factors too. We talked about coming out with intensity and starting out the game strong. The girls did just that and kept it going throughout the entire game.”

Two Rangers take top spots

The Hill City girls wrestling team finished fourth at the Gordon- Rushville 2023 Invite in Nebraska Dec. 9.
Both Tiara Faehnrich and  Brittney Hanson took home first place wins in their weight class.
Faehnrich (5-1) scored 24 team points in her 140 pound class. She defeated all three of her opponents by fall. 
According to head coach Tanner Davis, Faehnrich wrestled very hard through some “tough Nebraska girls” coming out on top of an eight girl bracket.

Ranger girls conquer Kougars, fall to Crusaders

The Hill City High School girls basketball team hit the court for the first game of the season Dec. 8 to face the Kougars at the Kadoka Area High School. 
Head coach Anna Eckert said the Ranger girls’ nerves showed for the first half of the game, but the third quarter was a turning point. 
“After we settled down, we started looking for our girls down low, became a little more disciplined on defense and started widening the lead,” said Eckert. 
The Rangers beat the Kougars 49-29. 

Ranger boys slam dunk at Kadoka, near miss at Red Cloud

The Hill City High School boys basketball team faced off against the Kadoka Area Kougars for their first game of the season Dec. 8. 
“The first game they played together as a team very well. They shared the ball well,” said head coach Laramie Harvey. 
Harvey said it was a back-and-forth game for the first quarter. Then, “In the second quarter we played better defensively, which allowed us to go on a bit of a run,” said Harvey. 

Boys basketball team more established

The Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team is eager to start the new season. 
This year the team is once again coached by Laramie Harvey. Harvey has coached in Hill City for 11 years. He spent eight years as an assistant coach for the girls basketball team and later became the head boys basketball coach in 2021. 
“I enjoy it. They’re a fun group of young men to be around,” said Harvey. 
Harvey is joined by assistant coach Scott Ferguson.

Taking to the mats

Wrestling in Hill City has begun and the girls came out strong in the first meet of the season, the Bill Young Invitational  in Custer.
Daisy Munoz (2-1) placed second in the 152 class and scored 18 team points winning by fall in both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. Munoz held on for a while in the first place match before falling at 3:11 to Aileana Brewer of Pine Ridge.
Tiara Faehnrich (2-1) placed thidrd in the 138 class  and scored 12 team points. Faehnrich fell her opponent in 12 seconds. 

Seven seniors return to girls basketball team

This year the Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team has a new head coach and a large group of returning players. 
Anna Eckert graduated from Hill City High School in 2004 and has been around the area forever. Her kids now go to the school, and she is married to Travis Eckert. 
Starting out, Eckert coached little children. She later shifted to coaching middle school. Her seniors today were on her first team as eighth graders. From there, Eckert moved up to junior varsity and now to varsity coaching. 

Davis takes on wrestling team

The Hill City High School wrestling team is gearing up for another season. This year, Tanner Davis is taking charge of the program as the head coach. 
Davis grew up in Wyoming and moved to the Hills his sophomore year of high school. He did wrestling at Hill City High School until graduation. 
After graduating Davis said, “I saw there was no real coaching left, and I just couldn’t sit there and think, ‘Oh, Hill City’s going to lose the program.’”
