Quilt show takes over town

The 2020 Hill City Quilt Show is officially in the books.

The quilt show attracted 684 paying attendees (those 18 years and older) over the two-day event, said Mackenzie Swanson, director of the Hill City Arts Council.

“I think it went well,” she said. “We did have some hiccups, but that’s to be expected, and our volunteers were great.”

Homecoming is next week

It’s that time of the year again.

Hill City’s homecoming is set to kick off Sept. 21 with two events.

The first event is the Ranger Chili Cookoff.

That event starts at 5:30 p.m. in the school lunchroom.

Ginsbach asks that the athletes from the different classes bring the following types of dishes to the school lunchroom before 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 21.

Quilts turn heads

The annual Bed Turning Show and Supper, which allows quilters the opportunity to socialize, swap stories and admire the talents of numerous quilters, took place at the Hill City Quilt Show this past weekend.

About 35 people came to admire the beautiful quilts and enjoy a lasagna dinner with proceeds benefiting the Xi Alpha Chi sorority.

“Quilters are a tight knit group,” said Kay Raderschadt, one of the organizers of the event.

Hometown celebration coming Sept. 19

The inaugural Keystone Hometown Celebration takes place on Sept. 19.

The brainchild of new Keystone Area Chamber of Commerce director Robin Pladson, the celebration is a way to bring the community together and offer a shoulder season event to tourists. Pladson, who began her tenure as chamber director this summer, is hoping to bring one event per month to the tiny town.

Senior center nagivates COVID-19

The Hill City Senior Center has navigated the COVID-19 waters, and now its ready to return to full activity.

The center was closed for roughly two-and-a-half months, said Mary Walton, executive director of the senior center, and did a light opening in the summer offering exercise two days a week and a coffee hour the other three.

Hill City has public arts project

Back in July, the Black Hills Film Festival obtained a $5,000 grant from the South Dakota Arts Council with the purpose of doing a public arts project and filming it for distribution to its streaming channel.

The next step has been taken as the film festival selected artist Mackenzie Swanson, herself executive director of the Hill City Arts Council, to carry out the project with filmmaker Randall Iverson. Swanson, as recipient of the grant, also has to do public workshop courses.

Quilt show is Sept. 12 and 13

The Hill City Quilt Show is coming up.

The two-day event will start on Sept. 12 and will end on Sept. 13. Each day, the show will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the gyms in the Hill City Middle School.

“We’ll also have quilts along Main Street,” said Mackenzie Swanson, executive director of the Hill City Arts Council. “We’re excited about that. We’re excited to have the businesses participating. It will be a good way to bring our community together.”

Special author event at library

The Library will be closed Sept. 5, 6, and 7 to observe Labor Day.

The Friends of the Library will meet Sept. 9 at 10:15 a.m. in the third floor conference room of the Hill City Super 8. Jamie Duprey will be the special guest presenting her book “The Yellow Sports Bra.”

Varns is newest Hill City pastor

The Lighthouse Assembly of God in Hill City has a new pastor — Dan Varns.

Varns has several decades experience pastor and looks forward to the opportunity to be a pastor in Hill City.

“I love the Black Hills. I love Hill City,” he said. “We have a lot of good things going on here. …To be able to move to Hill City is very exciting for me. I love the town, I love the area. I’m very excited to be here again.”

Varns was elected to become the pastor of Lighthouse Assembly of God on July 26.

Archery tournament is Aug. 29

With activities limited in this COVID-affected world, people in the Black Hills are fortunate to be surrounded by forest land providing countless opportunities to safely enjoy the great outdoors. For those with an interest in archery, an August tournament is scheduled to get individuals outdoors and test their skills with a bow and arrow. Aug. 29, Hill City Young Life along with Top Pin Archery, EMH Consulting, Rushmore Forest Products and many area businesses are sponsoring the seventh Annual Young Life Archery Tournament, five miles west of Hill City on Deerfield Road.
