LuAnn Newberg

LuAnn Marie (Hylle) Newberg was born Oct. 30, 1941, to David and Dolores Hylle of Miller, S.D.
LuAnn, the oldest of seven children, grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, in the small town of Custer. She joked that she got to play on Mount Rushmore, race spike-tired cars on frozen lakes, milk rattlesnake venom and was proud to say she even got to babysit for the creator of the Crazy Horse Memorial.
Shortly after graduating from high school she pursued and married a local boy, Norman Newberg, who had recently joined the U.S. Air Force. Over the next 20-plus years they moved from station to station, having four children along the way: Andrew and Angela while in England, Douglas while in Colorado and Matthew at Fairchild AFB, Wash. The family retired from the military after settling down in Cheney, Wash.
LuAnn spent most of her years in Cheney employed at Eastern Washington University. Even after retirement in 2006, she returned to work part-time at the bookstore. She “just couldn’t get enough of the place.”
Having lived in Cheney since the ’70s, LuAnn was happiest when she was part of a local group, whether it was bowling, local American Legion, Beta,  Golf or the Cheney Rodeo Assoc. She was also a fan of Eastern Eagle football, holding season tickets early on before the winning seasons and red turf.
LuAnn died Aug. 8,  2020. She was 78.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Andrew; brothers, Dan and Jim; and sister-in-law, Rita.
LuAnn is survived by three children, nine grandkids and even three great- grandkids.
LuAnn always enjoyed making her annual trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota to see her family and friends, and will make one more trip next July where she will be laid to rest in Custer.
