Pandemic-busters class offered in Keystone

A free class on healthy habits specifically designed to boost the immune system during COVID-19 is happening at Keystone Community Center Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. The Pandemic Busters class is hosted by Stacy Dean and Chris Miles, two medical missionaries who have been actively involved in the after school rec program at the Keystone Library. 

Lights out at Rushmore Forest Products

Rushmore Forest Products is preparing to officially shut down completely in Hill City after the announcement back in April of this year. The sawmill ownership attempted to keep the moulder running into 2022, but has since decided that the last day of operations will be Friday, Oct. 8. 

EV charging stations discussed

Black Hills Energy is getting on the electric vehicle bandwagon. A recent presentation in Hill City given by Matt Koupal, supervisor of electric operations, was attended by about 40 people.  
According to Koupal, the future of the industry  is  a movement away from hybrids and toward battery- only  vehicles. With that comes issues of range. 
“Charging stations are going to be really important,” said Koupal.

Rapid City artist wins Best in Show

The Hill City Arts Council Plein Air Paint Out drew a large crowd to Hill City last weekend. The festival featured numerous artists who came to the area for an opportunity to paint the beauty of the region, outside and in the moment. Mother Nature cooperated fully, bringing in crisp, smoke-free air and a fall light that made conditions nearly perfect. 

Parks, revamping BMX are discussed

The newly formed Hill City Park Board had its fourth meeting Sept. 21. The board had no action items on its agenda, but did receive public comment from Nathan McNulty of Hill City. 
McNulty asked for permission to repair the BMX track at Memorial Park. He approached the city prior to the meeting, offering to mow and weed whack the area to see “how bad it is.” He also reached out to a former BMX track owner in Rapid City who offered foam obstacles for free to rejuvenate Hill City’s old BMX track. 

COVID-19 school update

According to Hill City School superintendent Blake Gardner, as of Sept. 24, there was one elementary school student and one high school student with active COVID-19 cases. They are required to isolate 10 days, according to the S.D. Dept. of Health regulations. 
There were also two elementary, two middle school and one high school student who had close contact with someone with COVID-19 They are required to quarantine f72 hours. They are encouraged to stay home longer if they are even minimally ill and monitor symptoms for 10 days. 

Horseback riders essential to Roundup

The 56th Governor’s Buffalo Roundup is in the books. The event attracts young and old, newcomers and veterans, for a chance to witness a herd of 1,300-1,400 bison rounded up into the corrals of Custer State Park (CSP). 
Sixty horseback riders are integral to the events. Between 20-25 are long-time volunteers; 20 are “draw” riders, chosen from the general public from about 150 applications from all over the country; and 20 are appointees from the governor. 

Homecoming starts

This week the schools in Hill City embarked on the 99th celebration of homecoming and the activity calendar for the week is full of fun and memorable happenings for this unique marker. 
The schools kicked off a week of “Spirit Days” with all grade levels dressing as a celebrity. Students dressed as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, deputy sheriffs, singers, actors, and favorite characters from all parts of entertainment and celebrity culture. 

Ag continues to drive state economy

The Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) in cooperation with AgUnited for South Dakota, S.D. Dairy Producers, S.D. Corn Utilization Council, Central Plains Dairy Foundation, and East River Electric Power Cooperative have released an economic contribution study of South Dakota agriculture.

Adult Education Week celebrated

Sept. 19-25 was Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in Custer, made so by an executive proclamation signed by Mayor Bob Brown at the Sept. 20 meeting of the Custer City Council.
The proclamation was made at the behest of The Career Learning Center of the Black Hills, which administers adult education with classroom locations in Rapid City, Sturgis, Spearfish, Belle Fourche and Custer. There is effective distance learning options for all communities in western South Dakota.
