County backs proposed ag bill

A bill that would ensure ranchers and farmers don’t have to pay higher taxes on ag land that can’t be farmed will receive a letter of support from the Custer County Commission after the commission unanimously to support the bill at its most recent meeting.

COVID death toll over five million

The global death toll from COVID-19 death toll topped five million last week, less than two years into a crisis that has not only devastated poor countries but also humbled wealthy ones with first-rate health care systems, according to the Associated Press.
Together, the United States, the European Union, Britain and Brazil — all upper-middle- or high-income countries — account for one-eighth of the world’s population but nearly half of all reported deaths, the report states. The U.S. alone has recorded over 745,000 lives lost, more than any other nation.

Forest plan will need input

Black Hills National Forest officials have initiated the process to revise the current Land and Resource Management plan, otherwise referred to as the Forest Plan.  Forest plans guide all resource management actions on the Forest.  
The current forest service plan was released in 1983, revised in 1987 and amended in 2006.  Depending on the outcome of the process the plan can be revised again, amended or completely rewritten.

Keystone Town Hall may slash pile

The Keystone Town Board discussed its liability in having a community burn pile at its Oct. 20 meeting.
A letter, submitted by Garrett Dixon of the Battle Creek Fire Department, expressed concern over this practice.
“...the Town of Keystone has always had a yard waste pile for the residents of Keystone to bring tree limbs to and every year except last year the Town of Keystone has asked the Fire Department to burn it. There is alot of liability with doing that.”  

Halloween events this Saturday

This year the popular chamber & visitor center’s community event started in 2019, Hill City Children’s Boo Bash & Pumpkin Festival, will continue to add to Hill City’s spooky October festivities.
Following on the heels of Friday’s Oct. 29 Main Street Merchant Trick-or-Treat and Boys & Girls Club  Halloween Carnival, the Hill City Children’s Boo Bash & Pumpkin Festival will be Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Visitor Information Center (VIC).

Cannabis approaches differ in Hill City, Keystone

While the two towns of Keystone and Hill City  share many things, their vision of marijuana may not be one of them. The towns have taken different paths when it comes to rolling out the ordinances for what medical marijuana will look like when dispensaries, cultivation, testing and manufacturing centers begin to open in South Dakota.

Chamber banquet honors Custer’s stars

The Custer Area Chamber of Commerce presented its most prestigious annual honor—the Lifetime Achievement Award—to Jenny’s Floral owner Jenny Behlings last Thursday night. The award was presented at the end of the chamber’s annual membership banquet held at the Sylvan Lake Lodge in Custer State Park.
Presenting the plaque was Jenny’s Floral store manager Carrie Moore, who said the business has been a fixture of downtown Custer for nearly 35 years.

Trick or Treat Friday

The annual Custer Area Chamber of Commerce Merchants’ Trick or Treat is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 29, from 4-6 p.m.
The event allows children to dress in costume and visit participating downtown businesses to receive a treat.
Children who do not have bags to put their candy in can obtain one at Western Skies Realty or Custer Ace Hardware downtown, where the event will start. A list of participating businesses can also be obtained at those businesses.

Town of Hermosa sued over water

The Town of Hermosa has been named as the defendant in a lawsuit filed Oct. 15 by the Southern Black Hills Water System (SBHWS), with the latter claiming the former is poaching its customers and putting it in danger of not being able to repay federal loans used to make the water system happen.
The lawsuit states SBHWS was in the process of implementing a step in its phased plan by laying waterlines north of Hermosa. The waterline was engineered to connect to the water system’s Paramount Point and Spring Creek stations.

Millions more Americans just became eligible for COVID-19 boosters, but figuring out who’s eligible and when can be confusing. And adding to the challenge is that this time around, people can choose a different brand of vaccine for that extra dose, according to an article by the Associated Press.
A number of factors, including the vaccine you started with and when your last dose was, help determine when you qualify. Just like the initial shots, boosters are free and will be available at pharmacies, doctors’ offices and clinics.
