Twisters caused damage in Custer County

The violent Sunday windstorms that downed trees and power lines and toppled outbuildings south and east of Custer are believed to have spawned not one but two tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).   
At 3:59 p.m. forecasters at the NWS office in Rapid City issued a tornado warning for Custer County for a storm centered about five miles south southwest of Custer. The storm was estimated to be traveling northeast at 40 mph.

One Tesla car owner charging his car by Dakotamart Gas last Friday was approached by a local resident who apologized for the foggy, wet weather. “We’re used to crappy weather,” was the quick response. “We’re from Minnesota!”
Despite the less than ideal weather for the rally, 96 Teslas and 164 people registered for the event from all over the United States. Of the 96 Teslas, 55 were first-time attendees.

Holsworth, Etherington are Hermosa candidates

Longtime town board member Dan Holsworth will face challenger Marci Etherington for a three-year term on the Hermosa Town Board in the June 8 election.
Holsworth has served on the town board for the past 25 years, and is former board president. He is owner of GJ Holsworth and Son, Inc., which does lawn maintenance, landscaping, irrigation, etc..
Holsworth said he has always been involved with the community, and it is that interest in the community that has him seeking another term on the board.

Mikkelson, Weekley face off in Fairburn

Bradley Mikkelson is challenging incumbent Dean Weekley for a three-year term on the Fairburn Town Board during the June 8 election.
Weekley has been on the board for seven years and is a property owner/landlord in the town who said he tries to see both sides of every issue  before the board.
“If we are having problems in town I try to look at both sides,” he said.  “I like to walk the middle of the road and and try to work out a solution.”

Three vie for school board seats

Voters in the Custer School District have their choice of three candidates to fill two two-year positions on the Custer School District Board of Education when they head to the polls June 8.
Current board member Larry Baker of Hermosa is finishing out an appointed term, but had been on the board for two years prior, as well. He is joined in the election by two Custer residents, Sara Barrick and Caralee Weber.

County holds at 12 COVID deaths

It appeared as if Custer County recorded its first COVID-19-related death since early February last Thursday as the county grapples with being the only county in the state still showing substantial spread.

Ryan, McGowan vie for seat in Ward III

Voters in Ward III in the City of Custer will have a choice between incumbent Peg Ryan and challenger Monica McGowan in the upcoming June 8 election. The winner will serve a two-year term on the Custer City Council.
Ryan, who retired from the Massachusetts Department of Labor in 2007 and works part time as a hostess at Black Hills Burger & Bun, said being on the city council has been an intense learning experience for her. She is serving her second year on the  council.

Schilling, Jenniges are Ward II candidates

Current Custer City Council alderman Bob Schilling will face Julie Jenniges in the race for a one-year term on the council in Ward II in this June’s election. The term is one year because Schilling was appointed to the seat to finish out the term of former alderwoman Kris Blom, who resigned when she moved out of town.
Schilling said he decided to seek reelection to be able to work on some of the issues now before the council.
“I enjoy the challenge of trying to make the needs of the community come together with the needs of the city,” he said.

Rangers graduate

The 100th commencement of the Hill City High School class took place at Mount Rushmore this weekend.

The event celebrated 34 students, 12 of whom were Regents diplomas recipients.

Superintendent of the Hill City School District Blake Gardner addressed the students.

“Not only did you survive this crazy year — you thrived,” Gardner said. “You created memories and left a lasting legacy on our district for your academic, athletic, musical and theatre accomplishments. You helped us become the number one ranked school in South Dakota.”
