Keystone talks bathrooms, highway construction

During the July 20 Keystone Town Board meeting town finance officer Cassandra Ott said in 2024-25, part of Hwy. 385 will be reonstructed. Part of that process is widening the road and providing correctional space. This will take place between Sheridan Lake and the Lawrence/Pennington County line.

Wastewater plant to cost $3.5 million more than estimate

The renovation and upgrades to the City of Custer’s wastewater treatment plant is going to cost $3.5 million more than originally anticipated and be finished roughly a year later than originally thought.
That was the message delivered to the Custer City Council by Trent Bruce of DGR Engineering at the council’s July 18 meeting, with both the elevated cost and extended timeline the product of supply chain issues/material shortages as well as a lack of available contractors to bid on the work.

Access issues dominate council meeting

Access to property—or the lack thereof—was the order of the evening at the July 18 meeting of the Custer City Council, as three different access issues were discussed as either an agenda item or as a concern brought up by a citizen in attendance at the meeting during the public comment portion of the meeting.
Among those to talk was Leonard Pierce, who owns property on Bluebell Lane in the southwest part of town. The property, which is adjacent to Last Chance Campground, currently has no access, and the creation of that access was a source of consternation for Pierce.

Sturgis Rally planning underway

As the calendar moves ever closer to August the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally draws closer as well, and local first responders are already well into planning for the influx of people the rally brings on an annual basis.
Last Thursday afternoon a variety of first responders gathered at the Custer County Search and Rescue (SAR) building to discuss preparation for the rally, led in discussion by Custer County emergency management director Steve Esser.

Chip seal project starts July 27

The city’s street pavement preservation project to resurface roadways with a chip and fog seal application is set to begin on Wednesday, July 27. The maintenance work increases the pavement life, provides better traction and improves the appearance of the street.
The contractor will sweep the street, spray an emulsified oil, followed immediately with a rock chip. The contractor will then return in a few days to sweep away any excess chip and spray a light fog seal oil to further protect the road.

Why are numbers down in Keystone?

Despite visits to Mount Rushmore National Monument being up from this time last year, sales tax numbers in Keystone are down. The memorial has seen an 18 percent increase in visitors compared to June 2021. Bus volume is up considerably from last year and overall traffic around the monument has increased as well. 
Yet  Keystone is not getting those visitors.

City looking into new smoke shop

The Hill City Common Council July 11 meeting began with the city addressing the new smoke shop in town. According to City Administrator Brett McMacken staff has been in contact with the owner of the new business.
“The city is looking into its code to see what’s permissible and not,” he said. 
The store is not a dispensary.
“Obviously you can’t have that product without a license,” McMacken said. 

No charges in dog shooting

An incident recently brought up on social media will not result in any criminal charges.
An Addie Camp Road resident complained about a neighbor shooting their dog, resulting in the dog’s death. Hazel dog has been with the owner for seven years. According to the post, Hazel was hit three times by the shooter. Another dog, an 8-month-old St. Berdoodle named Paisley, was hit three times as well. Paisley survived the incident.
