Triple T to remain trailer park, for now

The fate of the Triple T Trailer Park east of Custer has been  the subject of various recent rumors. For now, it is to remain a trailer park—at least for a year —before it may be converted to an RV campground, says resident Joey Bucholz.
With housing availabilty a rising concern in the  Custer area, the rumored short time allowed for Triple T residents to leave their homes before renovation of the property caused some to become upset. However, any major changes are still up in the air.

Custer man dies following crash

A Custer man died last week after the vehicle he was driving crashed on the east side of town, but authorities don’t believe his death was caused by the accident. Rather, they believe a medical emergency on the part of the driver was the cause of the crash.

Frye-Mueller censured, reinstated by legislature

District 30 constituents once again have representation in the state Senate after Sen. Julie Frye-Mueller was reinstated.
In a unanimous decision the South Dakota State Senate’s “Select Committee on Discipline and Expulsion” voted to recommend to censure and reinstate the Frye-Mueller. The vote would limit her access to the Legislative Research Council (LRC) office and its staff for the remainder of the legislative session.

Petunias for a cause

Hill City area residents can continue to support the construction of the new Hill City Ambulance building by buying petunias.
The Supporters of the Hill City Ambulance have begun their spring hanging petunia basket sale. Businesses are given priority for the baskets as a means to beautify Hill City. Individuals can order too and are encouraged to do so. Each basket costs $50 and orders must be prepaid by March 1. 

DOT says no to restroom sign mall location

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) has denied the town’s request to relocate the public restrooms to the Keystone sign mall property.
A letter from Custer area engineer Rich Zacher explained the decision. 
“The removal of the sign mall would be in conflict with the original sign mall agreement that could require compensation to past billboard owners,” it read. Town board president Rick Greene said the decision “leaves us with pretty much the same location we have unless anyone has one.”

Tour de Chocolate returns this weekend

The 11th annual Tour de Chocolate is taking place on Feb. 11 throughout the day in correspondence to business hours. 
Visitors and community members are invited to take a tour of around 29 businesses across Hill City. At each stop, businesses will offer a feature chocolate treat with no purchase required as well as store specials. 

Polar Bear Chili Cook Off Saturday

Another chili cook-off is coming to Hill City, only this time it is a fundraiser for the Tin City Masonic Lodge No. 112. 
According to Mason John Knapp, “We started it so we could raise money to help us support the things we do for the kids.” 

Leaders differ on tax cut legislation

Republican legislative leaders are promising a conservative approach to the various tax cut bills that have been submitted during this session of the Legislature. Democratic leaders, who for years have backed a sales tax cut on food, aren’t entirely optimistic about the fate of this year’s tax cut legislation.
Their comments were made on Thursday, Jan. 26, to a group of editors and publishers in Pierre for Newspaper Day at the Legislature.

Republican and Democratic legislative leaders differed Thursday in their opinions about what should happen to former colleagues who took a state-sponsored trip to Hawaii during the last years of their terms.
The leaders made the comments to editors and publishers during Newspaper Day at the legislature Jan. 26.
