Golfers place second at conference meet

Austin Eggers and Gunner Prior both shot an 87 to tie for third place as the Custer High School golf team played its way to a second-place finish at the Black Hills Conference Golf Tournament at Spearfish Canyon Country Club Monday.
Also finishing in the top 10 for the Wildcats was Dustyn Fish, who finished in a tie for seventh place at 87. Rounding out Custer’s scores were Dylan Polzine at 97 and Ryder Bailey at 113.

A decisive three-set win over Hot Springs was the highlight of the week for the Custer girls volleyball team, bringing its record to 3-5 for the season.

Three weeks into the season, the Custer High School football team has now experienced both sides of a lopsided scoreboard.

Fresh off a convincing win over the Spearfish Spartans only a week earlier, the Wildcats were held to only 117 yards of offense and gave up 34 first-half points in last Friday’s 46-8 loss to the visiting Lennox Orioles.

Custer wins junior varsity golf invitational tourney

Wildcat golfer Justus Kramer shot a 47 to lead the Custer JV golf team to a first place victory in the Custer JV Invitational meet Friday at Rocky Knolls Golf Course. 
Teammate Ethan Lappe was seven strokes back at 54 to tie with Sturgis Brown’s Evan Stroud for second.
Other Custer golfers included Zach Douglas, 55; Matt Merrill, 58; Carter Bader, 67; Gage McGarrigle., 69; Dillon Baumstarck, 73; Mason Kieborz and Taycen Barnes, 78; and Reed Fortune, 81. 

Cross country does well at Belle

Custer’s varsity and JV cross country teams took home three first-place finishes and one second from the Belle Fourche Invite Thursday in spite of what coach Karen Karim called “terrible weather.” 

Karim said it was raining and windy in Belle Fourche and the course was soggy and slow, making for less impressive race times than the team had at the recent Augustana Twilight Meet.

Cheer team looks to ‘productive season’

After getting off to a slow start in their 2018 season, Custer’s mostly young and inexperienced competitive cheer team went on to take fourth place in the small squad division in the state tournament last October. While hoping to build on that success with several returning team members, coach Tiffany Newman says there are too many variables in play to make any predictions about the 2019 season which started last week. 

Another meet, another win for golf team

On Sept. 2 the Custer High School golf team continued its winning ways by cruising to the team title at the pre-region meet at Hart Ranch Golf Course outside Rapid City.
Dustyn Fish played his way to a second-place finish with an 87, followed by Austin Eggers in third at 89. Ryder Bailey was also in the top five, coming in fifth with a 90, while Dylan Polzine finished ninth at 99. Rounding out the Custer entries was Gunner Prior with a 109.
The Wildcats came in with a team score of 365, well ahead of second-place finishing St. Thomas More at 407.

Wildcats break Broncs in three

The Custer Wildcats girls volleyball team broke the Belle Fourche Broncs in three sets at home last Thursday to bring their season record to 2-3 on the new season. 
“We were very excited about our win over Belle Fourche and are happy to see the girls coming together as a team,” said co-head coach Jill Hohn. 
The ’Cats started out strong in the match at the Armory with a 25-14 win in the first set. Pulling ahead after a close start, Custer was able to capitalize on Belle’s mistakes and saw some strong team play.

Cheer team places fifth at Belle Fourche

A last-minute decision not to perform their pyramid may have cost them a higher placing but Custer High School competitive cheer team coach Tiffany Newman says she is pleased with her team’s performance at its first tournament of the season. 
The eight-member team traveled to Belle Fourche on Thursday to participate in its invitational competing against five other teams and placing fifth.
