Public comment open for uranium mining

A company that wants to mine for uranium in southwestern South Dakota is restarting its state permitting process and preparing for a public hearing after securing federal permits earlier this year.
Uranium is a metallic, radioactive element used as fuel in nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants. Interest in uranium exploration and mining has risen recently. That’s in response to nuclear energy’s potential to supply electricity for data centers.

Events to honor veterans planned

The community is invited to attend the Veterans Day assembly Nov. 11 at Gin’s Gym, Hill City High School, beginning at 9 a.m.  Sponsored by the high school student council, the assembly provides an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have served our country.

Grab your girlfriends, dust off your boots and head to Hill City for a weekend made for fun. The 14th annual Girlfriends’ Weekend returns Nov. 6-8, and this year’s theme, “The American Cowgirl,” brings a little western flair to the Heart of the Black Hills. 
The three-day event features a full lineup of entertainment, shopping, sipping and dining. From line-dancing and bouquet making, to artist meet-and-greets and Boozy Brunch, there’s plenty of fun to be had throughout the weekend.

10:44 a.m.: A Hermosa resident called to complain that their mail wasn’t being delivered in a timely fashion and reported a “chaotic mess” in the post office there. The resident was urged to call the appropriate federal agency, as the county sheriff’s office has nothing to do with mail delivery.
