Jimmy Simpson

Jimmy Simpson was born in Shawnee, Okla., to Patricia and Earl Simpson.
After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Air Force. He volunteered for the security police, where he was a dog handler and he was stationed in the Philippines and Vietnam.

Chester Fassett

Chester A. Fassett was born April 11, 1930, in Hot Springs, S.D., and raised in Custer, S.D., son of the late Cecil Fassett and Violet Doughty.  
He enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 and retired after 35 years of service as a pilot and as the deputy wing commander for maintenance.  His last assignment was at Altus AFB, Oklahoma.
Chet was a Vietnam veteran and received numerous awards including (Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and two Meritorious Service Medals).  In 1983, he began his second career and retired at DynCorp in Fort Worth, Texas.

Bruce Grummons

Bruce Grummons was born March 13, 1939, seven miles west of Pringle, S.D., to George Morgan and Vivian Nicolls.
Bruce was formerly the maintenance superintendent at the oil refinery in Newcastle, Wyo., where he lived for 57 years. He was also a member of the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department.
Bruce died Feb. 17, 2021 in Newcastle. He was 81.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Morgan and Vivian Nicolls; and his sister, Diane Grummons.

William Dohrmann

William Frederick Dohrmann was born Oct. 2, 1942, in San Francisco, Calif., to William and Doris (Bailly) Dohrmann.  William proudly served in the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge in 1968.
William died Feb. 20, 2021, at his residence in Edgemont, S.D. He was 78.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie of Edgemont; his children, grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home of Custer, S.D.

 

Delores Starr

Delores June Starr soared high with the angels to be seated at her mansion in the sky Feb. 3, 2021.
In life she was a compassionate, loving, caring mother who would make everyone’s day brighter. She was an extreme joy to be around. Delores had a heart more priceless than any jewel in the world. To all she will be missed.
Delores was preceded in death by her parents, Norval “Lucky” Kurzenberger and Dorothy Phillips; brothers, Kerry and Norman; and grandchild, Brandon Campbell.   

Vicki Devoe

Vicki  Joleen (Hammack) Devoe was born Aug. 7, 1949, in Alliance, Neb., to Delores and Michael Sonnenfelt.
When Delores and Michael split in 1950, Delores brought Vicki to Midwest, Wyo., via train. She did so to be near her parents, Mildred and Everett Johnson. Delores eventually married Willoughby “Bill” Hammack in Midwest, and Bill adopted Vicki and her sister, Trudi. The couple eventually had another daughter, Terri.
Vicki attended school in Midwest, graduating from Midwest High School in 1967.

Michael Carrier

Michael Thomas Carrier was born Feb. 19, 1951, in Rochester, N.Y., to Alfred and Jane (Cuccinella) Carrier.
Michael proudly served in the U.S. Marines until his honorable discharge in 1973.
Michael, of Custer, S.D., died Feb. 9, 2021, at Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs, S.D. He was 69.
He was preceded in death by  his wife, Kathleen; and his son, Aaron.
Michael is survived by his daughter, Alaina Carrier of Custer; sister, Elaine of New Jersey; and his three grandchildren, Alexis, Bella and Jayden.

Barney Nordstrom

Barney Nordstrom was born April 2, 1920, to Otto and Emily (Wiswell) Nordstrom. With his brother Cole, they homesteaded about 10 miles east of Fairburn, S.D., and later moved to the residence three miles east of Fairburn, where Barney lived until his death.
Barney was a great storyteller and always loved a good story and laughed out loud, often at his own expense. He told us many stories about some of the pranks he and his pals played on each other in high school.

Donald Schnoor

Don Eugene Schnoor was  born April 13, 1937, to Alfred and Clara (Van Asperen) Schnoor in Huron, S.D.
Don grew up ranching and graduated from Wessington (S.D.) High School where he was a decorated athlete, holding a state long jump record for many years.
A proud Jackrabbit, he attended South Dakota State University, receiving his degree in Wildlife Management. Active in ROTC throughout college, he ultimately attained the rank of Cadet Commander. Upon graduation, Don went on to proudly serve in the United States Air Force, flying C124s during the Vietnam War.

Roger Frye

Roger Dean Frye was born Oct. 29, 1940, to Henry J. (Hank) & Bernice E. Frye of Arlington, Neb. The Marshall Nurseries in Arlington is where Roger grew up and called home.
The Nursery was his first job where he discovered his love of nature and dendrology. He enjoyed coon hunting with his brothers (Jim and Jerry) along with his favorite dog, Muggs. During this time, Roger made his first trip to Rapid City, S.D., where he and his father planted the trees at Canyon Lake Park that still stand today.
