My 50 firsts list is officially being ticked!

I am kind of a foodie. There was a time when I only ate four things — hot dogs, chicken fingers, pizza and french fries.

But now… I eat almost anything and food is one of my passions.

That being said, I have a few 50 first food dreams that I have not yet fulfilled. Like the rest of my list when it comes to food I have done a lot of things so far.

Don’t make a resolution

Last year, you might have read a column that I wrote entitled something like “A very millennial resolution.” In that very column, I wrote about my New Year’s resolution for 2019: stay off my phone more.

Well, I write this column in 2020 informing you that, as someone recently told me, I have completely and utterly failed at that.

Bring on 2020!

I will turn 50 this year and I have decided to make a list of “50 firsts.” They are things I have never done that I have always wanted to do. This is a challenge for me. I have done a lot of things — lived in other countries, swam with giant turtles, gone whale watching, hitchhiked in Oz and motorcycled the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Christmas is here.

There are many things that I love about this time of year — decorating cookies, watching Christmas movies and spending time with loved ones.

But there’s another part of Christmas that I love.

This is the time of year to give back to your fellow man, to lend a hand to those who are less fortunate than us.

And the Hills have a plethora of ways to give back.

So a very cool friend of mine had to get rid of her chickens and asked me to take them.

I have always wanted chickens but right now is so not the best time for me to have them. Yet I went over there about two weeks ago to pick them up. I watched my friend trying to round them up — I certainly wasn’t about to get pecked to death and didn’t dare try to touch them.

So my 26th birthday is Monday (please hold all applause until the end).

My 26 years on earth have been interesting, for sure. Like everyone, I’ve experienced very high highs and very low lows.

I’ve learned a lot. As a lifelong learner it’s imperative that I learn from my mistakes. Sure, my girlfriend wishes that I didn’t need to make mistakes to learn obvious lessons, but, apparently, that’s not how I roll.

‘Tis the season! For ice climbing that is!

Yep, my favorite season is here and I have already been out exploring our Black Hills ice. 

My partners and I ventured out into the wilderness to climb a 100 foot ice climb known as the Harney flow. (I asked the questions if it’s now called the Black Elk Peak flow but got no response.)

Leslie was right: I do have something special cooking for this week.

Thanksgiving, as you well know, is Thursday. The day after that, Black Friday, represents a major retail-spending day for those big box stores and other national chains.

But there are two other “holidays” after that which mean a lot to local communities.

Keystone is the bestest!

Gray must have something delicious cooking for you next week, because he’s asked me to write back-to-back columns. And I knew exactly what I wanted to write about...I figured I’d fill you in on how cool Keystone is year-round.

Now I know you all know Keystone is the best place to hang out in the summer...we have the best museum in the Hills (and it’s free!). We have like a gazillion ice cream stores. And of course the largest mirror maze north of the Texas border.

This column will focus on the most important...the dreaded fall back!

I don’t know if it means I’m for daylight saving or against daylight saving (that’s more confusing than background checks for gun owners).
