Mayor shares COVID-19 plan

Hill City mayor Kathy Skorzewski has a new address for the city.

In the address, she spelled out the city’s response to COVID-19, commonly known as coronavirus.

“To say 2020 has been an interesting year is quite the understatement,” she said. “It seems like we went from a mild winter to what was gearing up to be a record-making spring, to a pandemic and the country literally closing down. We have all seen the news stories and have been watching what is happening in other parts of the country, and as we sit here in the beautiful Black Hills, it almost doesn't seem real.”

School facilities to reopen June 1

Hill City School District (HCSD) facilities will open back up to the community and students June 1, according to the most recent Hill City School Board of Education meeting.

Summer activities will also resume at that point. This is the day after the Governor’s executive order expires.

The district plans on abiding by any existing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

Department of Agriculture invests in rural broadband

Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced May 12 that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $3.3 million to provide broadband service in unserved and underserved rural areas in northwestern Pennington County near Rochford and Silver City.

The investment is part of the USDA’s round one investments through the ReConnect Pilot Program.

Pennington County adopts comprehensive plan

On May 5, the Pennington County Commission adopted the plan that will dictate what the county will look like.

The plan — known as a comprehensive plan — is entitled “View to 2040” and will guide the county for planning decisions for the next several decades.

“How can Pennington County preserve its heritage and accommodate the changes that are desired for the future?” the plan’s website reads. “That is one of the many questions that will be explored as part of the process of updating Pennington County’s Comprehensive Plan.”

Blame for meter costing town money

The Keystone sewer plant project is once again costing taxpayers money, according to discussion at the most recent town board meeting.
 
Jerry Przybylski, public works superintendent, informed the board that Rapid Rooter located the pipe that the meter needs to be placed on, as the previous pipe was empty and not correct. Even with the pipe located, the town would need to share the cost with RCS Construction and AE2S Engineering to install the meter on the pipe and to dig a new manhole.
