County budget talks continue

Wages and buildings topped the budget portion of the most  recent Pennington County Commission meeting Aug. 6. 
County Commissioner Deb Hadcock once again was a vocal opponent of the county spending plan. 
Hadcock made a motion for the auditor to come up with the amount spent on buildings in the last five years, including things like full-time employees, furniture, utilities and insurance.
Hadcock said, “We started buying buildings from the Care Campus until now, what are those costs? How did we pay for them?”

Sunset Creek resurfacing bid packet approved

The plans are in for the Sunset Creek resurfacing project in Hill City. These were prepared by Callen Hecker, a project engineer with AE2S, and were presented to the Hill City Common Council at the Aug. 12 meeting. 
Alderman Ethan Walker said he only had one question: “How do you feel realistically about the costs?” 

Complaint leads to museum closure

In an unexpected move, the Keystone Town Board voted to close the Keystone Museum and Schoolhouse effective immediately. 
The move came after an executive session at the town’s Aug. 14 budget hearing.
It arose out of a formal complaint to the state fire marshall that led to a local fire department inspection. The department gave the town a preliminary list of concerns prompting town board action. The motion made it clear the museum was not to be occupied until the issues could be fixed.

12th annual Wine, Brew & BBQ Friday, Saturday

You can almost smell the barbecue on the streets of Hill City. In just a few days, 25 professional barbecue teams and 32 Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) judges from South Dakota, Massachusetts, Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Canada will converge in downtown Hill City for the 12th annual Wine, Brew & BBQ (WBBBQ), Aug. 23-24. 

Biker advocacy group rumbles to D.C.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is an advocacy group that works to protect the rights of motorcyclists across the country. And while its agenda is twofold — one that’s  motorcycle-specific covering items like riding apparel safety standards, profiling specific to motorcyclists  and helmet laws, Kirk “Hardtail” Willard, President of MRF, said the work the group does isn’t just to help motorcyclists, it’s to help all motorists.

Rally numbers low, spirits high

The numbers are in and predictions were confirmed. Attendance was down for the 84th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. 
According to the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), numbers were down eight out of 10 days during the rally, slipping as low as 12.7 percent down from the five-year average on Sunday, Aug. 4. On the days numbers were up, it was up by only 1.7 percent at most.

Community Kids Clothing Closet is Aug. 16-17

With more clothes donated than ever before, the third annual Community Kids Clothing Closet will take place Friday, Aug. 16, from 2-6 p.m. and Saturday, August 17, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hill City Center. Community members are invited to attend this free event and “shop” the expansive variety of clothing items available. 

Sayer JaDin Photography studio now open in Hill City

Looking for a way to capture those special family memories? There is a new photographer in Hill City who might be able to help. 
Sayer Lockhart grew up in Hot Springs and got her first camera shortly after graduating high school. 
“I graduated high school when I was 17 thinking I was going to be a wedding planner, and I think that was God,” said Lockhart. 
Shortly after, two of her friends who were dating asked Lockhart to take anniversary photos for them.

Bikers rally around biker breakfast in Keystone

The Keystone Senior Center rally breakfast saw about 45 people over the two-day event. Most were locals but several groups of out of town bikers came in throughout the morning of Aug. 2 to sample the biscuits and gravy, eggs and coffee.
Some like Casey Kaelin and his wife, Fay, were first -timers to the rally, coming all the way from Treasure Valley in Idaho. The couple rode into the Black Hills  on a Stratoliner  Yamaha 1800cc bike. They said people who trailer their bikes, specifically for the first time, at the rally are cheating.
