Wildcats get Rangers’ revenge

The Custer High School Wildcat volleyball team began its week with a loss to the Hill City Rangers last Tuesday. Although Custer had beaten Hill City previously in the season, this time the Rangers were back with something to prove and were able to come away with a win in straight sets (25-18, 25-12, 25-15).

Wildcat boys race to second at state meet

The Custer High School Wildcat boys cross country team took second place at the Class A State Championship Meet at Hart Ranch in Rapid City last Saturday, with two runners earning medals for placing in the top 20 runners individually.
Senior Sean Shipp earned fifth place at the meet with a time of 16:49.99.
Hill City’s Tate Grabow, a junior, won the meet with his time of 16:17.50.

Cross country boys win region championship

Both the Custer High School boys and girls cross country teams have advanced to the Class A State meet after the boys claimed the Region 5A championship and the girls came away with third last week at Hart Ranch outside Rapid City. Both needed to finish in the top three teams to qualify for state. Individual racers could also qualify for the state meet by finishing in the top 20 places.

Hit and a miss for volleyball team

The girls faced a win and a loss last week as they met up with Mahpiya Luta on Tuesday and St. Thomas More on Thursday.
The team’s match with St. Thomas More (STM) was its third of the season and its third loss to the team, ending in three sets 20-25,-20-25, 19-25.
“I was disappointed with our play against STM.  We started the first set with over half of their points coming from our errors.  They are a good team, and you can’t give them those opportunities,” said head coach Jill Hohn.

Big-play Comets wallop Wildcats

Led by a big-play offense and a rugged defense the Rapid City Christian Comet football team laid waste to the Custer Wildcats last Friday evening at Hart Ranch, rolling to a 30-0 halftime lead on the way to a 44-7 win.
“They are good. You can tell by watching they are well coached. They are aggressive. Their aggressiveness up front created problems for us,” Custer head coach Russ Evans said. “Kudos to them.”

Ranger girls receive region title

Just like head coach Joe Noyes predicted, the Hill City High School Ranger cross country girls placed first and the boys placed second at the South Dakota High School AA Region 5A Cross Country Meet Oct. 17. 
“With athletic.net, we’re able to score out the meet and get an idea of where we can be,” said Noyes. “That allows us to have an idea of where we’re at going into the state meet and where we think we can climb to. It’s nice when it goes like you think, especially when you can score better than what you were projected.” 

Girls win two more as they wind down for season

The Rangers volleyball team is 24-3 coming into the final games of  the season. The girls won both their matches this week. coach Allie Henderson called the win against St Thomas More, (25-16, 14-25, 18-25, 25-18, 17-15)  stressful but fun.
“They were a completely different team from the one we saw at the beginning of the season,” Henderson said. “They came out blocking really strong and their middle hitters gave us a pretty hard time initially.” 
She said both teams made adjustments on the fly.  

Rangers want fans to make it loud

We like it loud. That’s the message from the Hill City Rangers football team as they host a playoff game Oct. 24. The boys want as many people as possible to come out to Ranger field and show support for their team. They say collectively that that support means a lot for their team.
Quarterback Devin Buehler, a senior this year, wants fans to, “make it loud. Everybody. It doesn’t matter if your newborn is sleeping. Bring them. We’ll have anybody there,” Buehler said.

Boy runners second in conference

The Custer High School Wildcat cross country team competed in the Black Hills Conference in Sturgis last Thursday with the boys coming away with second place and the girls placing sixth.
Senior Sean Shipp placed second in the meet behind Hill City’s Tate Grabow. Shipp finished the 5K race in 16:28.44.
“I think Sean had a very good race. Tate is a very good runner. He’s probably one of the top runners in class A,” said head coach Karen Karim.
Austin Drew finished in 10th place with a time of 17:51.84.

Wildcats golfers have disappointing state meet

It was a tough state tournament for the Custer High School boys golf team, as it played its way to an 11th-place finish at the Class A State Golf Meet, played at Central Valley Golf Course in Hartford.
The team entered the meet with high hopes of placing higher, even potentially bringing home a trophy from the meet.
