Charles Webber
Charles Clinton “Clint” Webber was born Nov. 2, 1927, in Lead, S.D., to Bert and Florence Webber. He grew up near Hill City, S.D., before moving to the Portland, Ore., area with his parents, where he graduated from high school in 1945. He was an WWII era Army veteran, serving primarily in Maryland and Japan.
After his military service Clint moved back to the Black Hills of South Dakota and started Custer Auto Parts with his dad. He played amateur baseball for Custer and Hot Springs, S.D. He married Pearl Korthaus in Custer May 5, 1951. He worked as an assistant manager in auto parts warehouses in Phoenix, Ariz., in the 1960s before moving with his family back to Custer in 1969 to own and operate Silver Spur Lanes bowling alley.
He was active in Lions Club, the chamber of commerce and the community during his Custer business years. After retirement, he drove the activity bus for Custer Schools. He and Pearl lived in Custer and then the Phoenix area until her death Aug. 27, 2004.
While in Phoenix he volunteered as an usher during baseball spring training for over 25 years. He moved from Arizona to Wichita, Kan., in 2022.
Clint, of Goddard, Kan., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024, at Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita. He was 96.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Pearl; his parents; and his sister, Eleanor Webster.
Clint is survived by his three sons, Dennis (Loretha) Webber of Tea, S.D., Rod (Marla) Webber of Wichita, and Brian (Jane) Webber of Everett, Wash.; grandchildren, Michael Webber, Emily (Josh) Gulbrandson, Megan (Craig) Koenigs, Matthew Webber, Bradley Webber and Erin Webber; and great-grandchildren, Ian and Isaiah Gulbrandson and Noah and Myron Koenigs.
Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, S.D., Thursday, Sept. 5 from 5-7 p.m. A graveside service with military honors will be at the Custer Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 with refreshments following at the Custer VFW.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Custer VFW/Custer American Legion or the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita at cdce
