City, county seats up for election

Election petition time is here once again, and election petitions can now be pulled for a variety of offices and seats around the county, including school board and the various town councils.
In the City of Custer, there are three seats open on the city council, with a seat open in each ward.
In Ward I, the seat belonging to Dixie Whittaker is up for election, while the seat belonging to Julie Jenniges is up in Ward II and the seat belonging to Todd Pechota is up in Ward III.
Circulation of nominating petitions began March 1, and petitions may be filed in the office of the finance officer located at Custer City Hall Monday through Thursday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to noon. The petitions must be filed by 5 p.m. March 26 or mailed by registered mail by 5 p.m. on March 26.
The Custer School District Board of Education has two seats up for election.
Jeff Barnes and Jeff Prior both have seats up for election, with both seats available being a three-year term.
Circulation of nominating petitions began March 1 and can be filed in the office of the business manager located at 527 Montgomery Street between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Fridays.  Petitions must be filed no later than March 26 at 5 p.m. or mailed by registered mail no later than that same date and time.
Custer County will have two commission races this year, as the seats currently held by Mark Hartman and Mike Busskohl will be contested. Both seats are four-year terms.
Nominating Petitions were able to be picked up for circulation Jan. 1. The last day to file primary nominating petitions at the courthouse is March 26.  The final day to withdraw a Nominating Petition from the primary election is March 28.
Custer County State’s Attorney, currently held by Tracy Kelley, will be up for election this year and is a four-year term. A four-year term for county coroner, currently held by Jim Sanders, is also available.
In Hermosa, there are two seats up for election, with one being three-year terms and one being a two-year term.
The seats currently belonging to Dan Holsworth and formerly to Jerry Styles are set to be contested. Holsworth’s seat is a three-year term, while Styles’ is a two-year term, as he resigned in the first year of his three-year term.
Circulation of nominating petitions began March 1 with the finance officer at the Hermosa Town Hall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and no later than 5 p.m. March 26.
There is one seat available in Fairburn, that being a three-year term for the seat currently held by Dean Weekley.
Circulation of nominating petitions began March 1, and petitions may be filed in the office of the finance officer of Fairburn at 110 Lynn St. between the hours of 4-5 p.m. March 26 or between 7-7:30 p.m. March 15. Petitions may also be submitted by registered mail if postmarked by the deadline date of March 26.
At the Elk Mountain School District, one on the board is set to be contested, a three-year term currently held by Joann Boggs.
Circulation of nominating petitions began March 1 and may be filed in the office of the Elk Mountain School Business Manager located at 10222 Valley Road at Dewey  no later than 5 p.m. March 26 or mailed to Elk Mountain School by registered mail  by that same time.  For questions call the Elk Mountain School business office at  605-749-2258.
Finally, in Buffalo Gap, there is one three-year seat available. Daniel Frieden’s seat is up, and he has chosen not to seek reelection. Running for the seat are Kevin Molloy and Glenn A. Scofield of Buffalo Gap. That election is set to be contested early, however, and nominating petitions were due by Feb. 23.
All three positions in District 30 are up for election, with the seats of Reps. Dennis Krull and Trish Ladner to be contested, along with the seat currently belonging to Sen. Julie Frye-Mueller.
