Custer Farmer’s Market returns through October

The Custer Farmer’s Market has returned to Way Park through the end of October. Rainy weather didn’t stop some vendors from making it to the park for the first open morning of the year, and it didn’t stop some vendors from selling out either. For over a decade, farmers, artisans, bakers and more have set up shop to sell their products to locals and visitors alike.
Gordon Cleveland, who organizes the farmer’s market, had been a farmer himself, so the starting the market was a natural next step. In total, there are about 13 vendors who come to the market in Custer, although often not all in the same weekend. Due to the rainy weather on Saturday, some vendors had to back out either the day before or the day of. Still, four vendors made it out for the first day, and were busier than they expected to be, with many even selling out of their supply.
The vendors at the previous market day sold fresh produce and vegetables; boxes, picture frames and other wooden products built from local wood; fresh-baked bread loaves and scones; and a variety of knit and crochet items.
One vendor, Meg King, has been a part of farmer’s markets in three states: South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa. At Custer’s market, she sells a variety fresh-baked goods as well as knit and crochet items. She recommends visiting the Custer Farmer’s Market because of the large variety of items sold.
“You can just look at the things and be in the fresh mountain air,” said King.
