Hansel Hunter

Hansel “Hal” Alfred Hunter was born Dec. 4, 1934, in Sharples, Logan County, W.V. He was raised in Boone County, W.V. He entered the U.S. Air Force Dec. 22, 1956 and received an honorable discharge Dec. 21, 1962. During that time, he served in South Dakota, Morocco and California.
Hal worked in the State of California prison system, Southern Pacific Pipeline Co., Custer County (S.D.) Planning Department, and as an independent contractor.
On Jan. 12, 1957, he married Carolyn Ruth Reese at Indianapolis, Ind. They were married until her death Jan. 11, 2021.
Hal passed away Aug. 15, 2023 at the Maurice J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, S.D. He was 88.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramie Lawrence Hunter and Zelma Baisden Hunter; siblings, Henry Hunter, Heschel “Doc” Hunter, Roberta Harbison, Harry Franklin Hunter and Virginia Sue Maison; wife, Carolyn Ruth Reese Hunter; and children, Phillip Lee Hunter and Shelia Rae Hunter.
He is survived by his siblings, Herman Hunter of Mason, Ohio and Homer Hunter of Stony Bottom, W.V.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
Military graveside rites were at the Custer Cemetery Aug. 21.
