Hill City School District features teacher Andra Swanson

What grade/subject do you teach? 

Kindergarten through  eighth grade Physical Education (PE) and sixth grade Social Studies.

 

Where did you grow up and where did you go to college? 

I grew up in Keystone until the flood of 1972 and then our family moved to Hill City. 

I went to college at the University of Huron, in Huron, S.D.

 

How long have you been a teacher? 

This is my 33rd year of teaching. I coached before that. I wanted to teach PE, so I waited for my dream job. Who knew it would be here in my hometown?

 

Why did you become a teacher? 

I only wanted to play basketball for the rest of my life, so I did the next best thing — teach and coach.

 

What do you love about teaching?

Seeing students improve, to see their eyes understand what you just said, the  smiles, and  the “aha” of the experience.

 

Would you like to share any personal info about coaching, family, pets?

I started coaching when I graduated from college in 1983. I didn’t start teaching until 1990. I have been coaching on and off throughout my teaching career. 

My husband Guy and I have been married for 36 years. We have four children and six grandchildren.

I love having a great laugh with friends and family and enjoying the Hills.

We are down to one dog and some chickens.
