School starts next Wednesday

Where did the summer go?
Many Custer School District students are likely asking this question—and maybe even their parents for that matter—but school starts in the district next Wednesday, Aug. 23.
New student enrollment is currently underway, and runs through the first day of school. Junior kindergarten through sixth grade enrollment at Custer Elementary is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, as is Custer Jr./Sr. High School enrollment. Hermosa School enrollment is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Computer checkout and student schedules are available at the Jr./Sr. high school Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the school.
There are a series of open houses Aug. 21, including the Custer Elementary School from 4-6 p.m., and the Hermosa School at the same time. Custer kindergarten and junior kindergarten at 5:30 p.m.
The Custer Jr./Sr. High School open house is from 5-7 p.m. and internet safety presentation with Holly Strand 6:30 to 8 p.m. for students and parents at the theatre. Students are also welcome to attend at parental discretion.
Jr./Sr. high class schedule distribution and class changes will be held at the same time as laptop check-outs. Paperwork will need to be completed and a parent’s signature and necessary payment is required prior to a laptop being issued. There is a $25 nonrefundable fee per student or a maximum of $50 per family. Prices for computer coverage does not include lost chargers or battery replacements. Laptops are for students in grades 7-12 only and legal guardians must be present to sign paperwork.
Parent Portal is available to put money into student meal accounts and those needing to sign up for Parent Portal are asked to contact the administrative assistant at their child’s school. This can be found on the districts website at csd.k12.sd.us.
Those wishing to apply for free or reduced meals for 2023-24 must complete an application and may return it to any school office or the district administrative office at the Armory.
Families who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, or participate in other federal assistance programs, including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) are automatically eligible. Families earning at or below current income eligibility guidelines, could be eligible for free or reduced-priced meals.
School days hours are 7:45 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. at Custer Elementary and Hermosa School and 7:50 a.m. to 3:46 p.m. for Custer Jr./Sr. High School.
In town bus stops include 7:18 a.m. at the Super 8, 7:21 a.m. at Sentinel Federal Credit Union and 7:26 a.m. at Lynn’s Dakotamart. The bus from hermosa leaves the Hermosa School parking lot at 6:40 a.m. sharp for Custer and returns at 4:30 p.m.
