Thoughts on the government shutdown
How’s the Peace Treaty going in Israel? Recently an Israeli soldier was shot and killed in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city.
Consequently, Israel carried out strikes that killed over 100 people, of which around 60 were women and children. Don’t forget we let 2,000 terrorists free, mostly murderers and rapists, during the Oct. 7, 2023 attack in exchange for 20 hostages. As I mentioned before, what are those 2,000 terrorists doing right now?
President Trump wants a third term. I’d be careful what I wished for here. That means past presidents Obama and Clinton could run as well as past president Bush ( No. 43). Chances of that happening are about as likely as Pope Leo converting to Lutheranism after attending an Augustana hockey game in Sioux Falls. It requires changing the 22nd amendment. Thank God for our constitution. It is the law of the land.
The government shutdown. Here is what really upsets me:
1. Active duty military weren’t getting paid! At the same time, retired military and VA disability checks are not affected. Our active duty military has to be paid.
I remember when I was an enlisted person as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. I was so proud of my huge paycheck. I made $809 per month as an E-5. That’s base pay, housing and separate rations, plus $55 per month jump pay. However, if I didn’t get paid, I would have been in big trouble financially with rent, car payments, etc. I remember I bought a 17” RCA XL 100 color TV for $25 per month so we could watch football games.
2. Air traffic controllers, like the military, were required to go to work under very stressful conditions. They were not getting paid while every senator and congressman in D.C. was getting paid! This is total injustice.
3. President Trump donates his $400,000 salary to a very noble cause. However, he is suing the U.S. government for $230 million? Sound disingenuous to me.
4. SNAP and EBT cards. These cost $100 billion per year and make up 85 percent of the farm bill. Only 15 percent of the farm bill goes to our farmers. In South Dakota one in 12 are on “food stamps”/EBT at a cost of $75 million per year. These are federal funds, not state funds.
Sen. Thune was jockeying monies around so soldiers/military could be paid through Nov. 15. However, he needed to do whatever it took to end the shutdown.
A little known fact is that some of our active military qualify for food assistance/EBT. Do you think an air traffic controller, a military member or a family that needs food assistance to eat care if Thune used the nuclear option to open up our federal government?
We can all give thankful praise we live in South Dakota, the freest state in the nation. We balance our budget every year and even have a substantial savings account should we as a state run on hard times.
God bless the great state of South Dakota! Representative Tim Goodwin, District 30
