Two dead in Tuesday morning collision

A scooter-car collision Tuesday morning has claimed the life of two Wisconsin residents.
At 10:37 a.m. Sept. 5, first responders were called to the intersection of Hwy. 16A and Washington Street for a report of an accident.
Lt. Steve McMillin of the Custer County Sheriff’s Office said a preliminary investigation showed the two Wisconsin residents, a 67-year-old male and a 74-year-old female, were traveling east toward Custer State Park on Hwy. 16A when a 78-year-old Custer woman turned from Washington Street to go west on Hwy. 16A. The Genuine Scooter Company Buddy the Wisconsin residents were riding on hit the front quarter panel of the 2017 Subaru Outback being driven by the Custer woman.
Both of the scooter riders, who were thrown from the scooter, were wearing helmets, but the woman’s helmet came off on impact. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no injuries to the woman in the Subaru, or to her passenger. McMillin said the car stayed on scene and immediately called 911.
McMillin said there was no alcohol was involved int the incident, and an investigation will have to be completed to determine what, if any, charges would be filed.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
