Awards given at Legion anniversary

The American Legion and the Custer American Legion Post #46 both celebrated their 105th birthdays with a benquet and award ceremony last Tuesday at the Laughing Water Resturant at Crazy Horse. Commander Glen Talley said it was the most attended annual banquet they’ve had.
One of the highlights of the evening was when the ceremonial first slice of the birthday cake was cut by a local veteran couple, Albert and Sharron St. Germaine. Albert is one of two WWII veterans who are a part of Post #46. His wife Sharon is a veteran of the Vietnam War.
The guest speaker for the evening was Doug Harris, Dept. District 1 and 2 Vice Commander.
The American Legion also gave its annual public service awards to members of the community who exemplify the values of the American Legion. The Law Enforcement Officer fo the Year was Ben Seyfried of Wind Cave National Park. The Firefighter of the Year was Craig Johnson. For Educator of the  Year, it awarded Lisa Richardson of Elk Mountian School District. The EMT Repsonder of the Year was Ruth Airheart. For business of the year, Custer Dental Studio was awarded.
Richard Brierly was recognized as Legionnaire of the Year.
Legion Longevity Service Awards were also given.
• For five years of service to the Legion: Mary Clauser, Tim Kinnamon, Mike LeMaster, Stephan McMillin, Rob McWhorter, Jeffery Mortenson, Albert StGermaine, Sharon StGermaine, John Cotner, Richard Hamm, Robert Jewel, Daniel Oneal.
• For 10 years: Pete Burkette, Donna Talley, Jan Terrall.
• For 15 years: Ralph Kelley.
• For 25 years: Charles Najacht.
• For 40 years: Paul Larson.
• For 45 years: Randy Skott..
• For 50 years: Bob Hugelman.
• For 55 years: Jim Welch.
Following the awards ceremony, the Amercain Legion Post drew for a wide array of  raffle prizes and revealed the winners of the silent auction. Prizes and auction items were generously donated by area businesses and organizations. The proceeds of the raffle and auction support the Legion’s mission of supporting veterans.
