Offense MIA as ’Cats fall to Spartans

In a got to have it game in terms of regional playoff seeding, the Custer High School boys basketball team had arguably its worst offensive performance of the season last Thursday evening in Spearfish.
A look at the box score tells the story.
The Wildcats shot 33 percent from the floor, including a 19 percent effort from three-point range. They were 3-12 from the free throw line. They committed 19 turnovers, which Spearfish converted into 21 points—a 17-point advantage over the Wildcats in that statistic.

Wildcat girls thumped by Class AA schools

Fresh off a week in which it went 3-0 and was brimming with confidence, the Custer High School girls basketball team had its winning streak ended and a losing streak started in emphatic fashion as the Wildcats were thumped by a pair of Class AA schools, losing to Spearfish 67-31 and Sturgis 57-38. Both games were played on the road.
For Custer head coach Tayton Vincent, losing that big to Spearfish is one thing—the Spartans are 12-4 and one of the better teams in Class AA.
The lopsided loss to Sturgis, however, had Vincent in a less-than-pleasant mood.

Girls wrestle in Hot Springs

The Custer High School girls wrestling team competed in its last regular season competition in Hot Springs over the past weekend, with all wrestlers placing in the top three in their respective weight classes.
“The level of competition we see there isn’t like what we see in Pierre, the Mid Dakota Monster or Rapid City, but we got some pretty decent matches in,” said coach Clayton Sander.

Wildcat girls upset Belle during 3-0 week

Don’t look now, but the Custer High School girls basketball team is quickly becoming the team nobody wants to see come postseason play.
The Wildcats have now won three in a row thanks to a perfect week of play last week, including one of the bigger upsets in recent program history when the Wildcats upset Belle Fourche 50-43 last Saturday afternoon in the Armory.

Wrestlers cowgirl up in the Cowboy State

The Custer High School girls wrestling team competed in the Cowboy State, Wyoming, over the past weekend at the Lady Dogie Classic in Newcastle, Wyo. The team earned fifth place as a whole, with several individual wrestlers placing at the meet too.
“This was the first year we’ve been over to compete in Newcastle,” said coach Clayton Sander. “It was nice to see some different competition.”

Wildcats have dominant week, head to Spearfish Thursday

Is the Custer High School boys basketball team this good, or was last weekend’s competition shall we say, less than stellar?
That was the question on the coaching staff’s mind following an absolute dominant week of basketball by the Wildcats, as the team improved its record to 13-3 with three blowout wins over Douglas, Hot Springs and Belle Fourche by an average of over 40 points.
“You always worry if we are going to play to the level of our competition,” Custer head coach Paul Kelley said. “Right now we are playing like we are capable of playing.”

Wildcat boy wrestlers finish fifth at Black Hills Classic

The Custer High School boys wrestling team went to Hill City to compete in the Black Hills Classic tournament over this past weekend, taking fifth place as a team. Individually, many wrestlers did well and earned top spots on the podium.
“It was good. A lot of younger kids stepped up and we’re trying to get kids back on the mat,” said head coach Jared Webster.
Now, nearing the end of the season, Webster said the team is focused on delivering their best at the time when it matters most.

Boys place eighth over weekend

The Custer High School Wildcat boys wrestling team spent the past weekend in Belle Fourche, competing in the Belle Fourche Invitational and coming away with eighth place in the meet.
Wrestling at the 106-pound weight class was Cole Scott, who did not place but earned seven team points with a pair of pins over Aiden Sawatzky of St. Thomas More in 46 seconds and over Evan Kelly of Hulett, Wyo., in 2:43.
Jackson Trant and Riley Trout wrestled at 113. Trant did not place, but Trout earned fourth place.

Girls place fifth at Belle Fourche meet

The Custer High School girls wrestling team competed in the Belle Fourhce Invitational this past weekend, coming away with fifth place as a team.
At 107 pounds was Essah Syverson, who earned third. She won her first match over Douglas-Rapid City Christian-New Underwood’s Jaden Huffman by 18-2 tech fall. She then lost the next by pin to Annalee Pierson of Sturgis in 3:25 before she went on to win the next two matches, first over Lia Mundt of Belle Fourhce by 13-9 decision and over Paesyn Wilson of Bennett County in 2:19.

’Cats lose heartbreaker to Christian

In a game that saw the score go up by as much as seven points, the Custer High School basketball team faltered down the stretch in what to date was the team’s biggest game of the season as it fell to Rapid City Christian 69-65 Jan. 28 at Hart Ranch.
“As I look through the stats, I’m wondering how we lost that game,” Custer head coach Paul Kelley said. “There are two that stand out: number one is turnovers—over half came in the first half. The other was they shot 19 more free throws than we did.”
