Girls second at holiday extravaganza

The Custer High School girls wrestling team competed in the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza tournament in Hot Springs over the past weekend, and mustered a second place finish as a team. Individually, many wrestlers did quite well, too.
“The competition was a little bit weaker this year there in my opinion, but there was some schools that we normally don’t see. We had two champions, Tiara and Jessica, and I thought they wrestled really well,” said coach Clayton Sander.
Keira Thorp, wrestling at 100 pounds,  placed second and scored 16 team points.

Boys third in Hot Springs

The Custer High School Wildcat boys wrestling team competed in the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza tournament over the past weekend, taking third place as a team. Many individuals also placed well, and the team won each of their duals in the East-west duals with Miller-Highmore-Harrold, Bennett County and Lyman.
Head coach Jared Webster was disappointed with some injuries on the team, but said it gave younger wrestlers good experience.

Big second half propels Wildcats

What a difference a half makes.
Plagued by poor shooting, turnovers and shoddy defense, the Custer High School boys basketball team went into the halftime break of its season-opening game against Sturgis last Friday down 34-26.
The second half was an entirely different story, however, as the Wildcats outscored the visiting Scoopers 45-20 in that half on the way to a 71-54 win.

Poor shooting—especially from the free throw line but also from the field—was among the biggest culprits in the Custer High School girls basketball team’s season-opening loss last Friday in the Armory as the Wildcats fell to the Sturgis Scoopers 52-34. The Wildcats shot 27 percent from the field for the game, and made only seven of 22 free throw attempts, good for only 31 percent.

Girl grapplers ninth at Rapid City

The Wildcat girls wrestling team placed ninth at the Rapid City Invite, a large tournament that brings teams from across South Dakota and beyond for a very competitive day of wrestling.
“I thought the girls wrestled really well. There’s some good girls, and we stacked up pretty much were I thought we should with them,” said coach Clayton Sander.

Boys win season-opening Bill Young Invitational

Once again the Custer boys wrestling team has won the home Bill Young Invitational Wrestling Tournament, and several on the team took spots on the podium.
With a combined 192.5 points, Custer won the tournament, ahead of Sturgis with 187 and Belle Fourche with 183.
“I didn’t think we would [win] this year because we had a lot of voids and we even pulled Riley [Scott] out of the tournament and that’s a 30-point getter. Pulling that off without him is pretty good,” said head coach Jared Webster.

Girls place fifth in Custer meet

The Custer High School girls wrestling team competed in the girls Bill Young Invitational in Custer on Saturday, with several girls placing in the tournament, leading to a fifth place finish for the team. This was the first year that the tournament was split into two days, one for boys and one for girls, due to the rapid growth of the sport among female athletes.

Girls hope experience carries them

Custer High School girls basketball enters its second season under the direction of head coach Tayton Vincent this Friday, and returns three all-conference players and a wealth of other experienced players as it tries to improve upon last year’s 9-12 record.
“The girls are coming in and they are willing to work extremely hard,” Vincent said. “Things are moving along. They know the system coming in. Most of the freshmen participated on the ‘C’ team the second half of last year. It makes that transition a little easier between year one and year two as a head coach.”

If you looked up the definition of potential in the dictionary, you may very well see a photo of the 2004-25 Custer High School boys basketball team.
The Wildcats are dripping with potential.
Eight seniors will suit up for the Wildcats this winter, and all eight will contribute. The team has size, experience and athleticism in spades.
