Aman scholarship off to good start

Applications for the Lloyd Aman Workforce Development Scholarship are being accepted through April 15.
The one-time $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior or Custer area resident who plans to pursue training/education toward a career in the skilled trade industry. The scholarship will be paid directly to the educational/training institution indicated in the application. Scholarship recipients are evaluated and selected by the Lloyd Aman Scholarship Committee.

One act advances to state festival

The cast and crew of Custer High School Drama Department’s one act contest play will be taking their show on the road this week headed for Rapid City for the South Dakota Class A One Act Play Festival. The production, “About Her” was one of two plays to advance to state from among seven schools that participated in the Region VI contest held at the Custer High School Theater last Wednesday.

NHS inducted without ceremony

It has been a tough year for all school extracurricular activities, but one of the hardest hit was perhaps Custer High School’s National Honor Society (NHS). Sixteen juniors were to be inducted into the organization last spring, but because of the school closure in March, a formal ceremony was never held.
Students qualify with their grades as juniors, but then have to apply to be members of NHS and those qualifying are inducted in a springtime ceremony. Applicants are evaluated by a faculty committee on the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, leadership, character and service.

New scholarship will honor Lloyd Aman

Lloyd Aman was a man of few words. But those he helped at some point in time—which is pretty much the entire City of Custer—have plenty to say about what he meant to them.
“We all knew you didn’t get a lot of conversation out of Lloyd,” said Mike Pahl, one of Aman’s friends in Custer. “You didn’t hire him to have a conversation. You knew you were going to be treated fairly and things were going to get fixed. He helped us so many different places.”

Senior has career cut out for him

While most high school seniors are choosing which college to attend and what field of study to pursue as they approach their second semester, Gunner Prior already has his career plan cut and dried. The Custer High School senior recently purchased a wood processor and plans to cut a career path for himself in the firewood business.

Casses come home to Hills

After spending the last seven years working in an office and doing paperwork as a special education director, Tobey Cass says he is happy to be back “in the schools” working daily with students and teachers. He was hired to replace Jordan Likness as Custer High School’s activities director and assistant principal and brings 22 years of experience as both a teacher and administrator to the job.

Grading the school’s lost quarter

Even though there was not one minute of in-classroom instruction during the fourth quarter due to the statewide coronavirus school shutdowns that began in mid-March, school administrators say they are proud of the way everyone came together to make the learning continue at home. 
Acknowledging that “it’s been hard,” Custer Elementary principal Barb Paulson and jr./sr. high principal Orion Thompson said, for the most part, staff, parents and students are to be applauded for their efforts.
