CYAF announces scholarship winners

Members of the Custer Youth and Alumni Foundation (CYAF) recently sent scholarship letters to Custer seniors. This year two students received the academic scholarship, and two students received the community service scholarship. A record number of students applied for the scholarships this year.
Anna Marie Riner and Justus Kramer received the $500 Academic Scholarship, while Ember Fluck and Shelby Gramkow received the $500 Community Service Scholarship.

CHS students place in HOSA event

Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), recently held a virtual state leadership conference, which included particpants from Custer High School.
Among those who qualified for the national confernece by virtue of placing in the top five of their respective event were:
• Second place in Public Health Event:  Anna Marie Riner and Timothy Johnson 
• Second place in Home Health Aide:  Ember Fluck

Coffee cart benefits students, staff

The Custer Jr./Sr High School (CHS) Special Education department started a new program Feb. 5 for junior high and high school students. 
The program is a coffee cart which was served to staff Tuesday mornings by junior high and high school students who rotate each week. The idea came from speech-language pathologist Kassie Davalos and occupational therapist Susan Hans for the social skills groups in the CHS building.

Girls Rock camp to return in June

Come this June, girls in the Southern Black Hills will show just how hard they can rock with Girls Rock Camp. 

Custer FCCLA attends region meet

The Custer FCCLA chapter attended the Region I meeting in Rapid City Jan. 29 with advisor Tiffany Newman and 14 members. Those who attended included chapter officers Remington Miklos, Kelby Hicks, Shaylee Gramkow, Nancy Falkenburg Brown, Ryken Falkenburg Brown and Rachel Miklos, along with other members Hailey Hislop, Sonja Olson, Olivia Wilkins, Ciara Thompson, Eva Studt, Hailee Graf, Abby Studt and Payton Noem. This meeting allowed members to present projects to judges, host workshops and run for state positions.

Three in a row for one acts

Custer’s entry into the S.D. State One Act Play Festival in Sioux Falls over the weekend took home a superior play rating and six individual acting awards for the cast of eight. 
The dramatic play “...And Others,” in which senior Anna Marie Riner plays a woman suffering from multiple personality disorder, qualified for the state festival by winning the Region 6A one act play contest held in Custer on Jan. 29. 

FCCLA gaining popularity at CHS

Three years ago an organization—Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)—started at Custer Jr./Sr High School (CHS) under the leadership of CHS Family and Consumer Sciences teacher Tiffany Newman. 
Students middle school through grade 12 can  become a member at any time as long as they have taken a course in Family and Consumer Sciences. The first year, the Custer chapter started with 29 members and now has 24. Each chapter requires a membership fee which covers local, state and national dues. The Custer chapter membership fee is $25. 

One Acts this week

Custer Jr./Sr. High School (CHS) Drama Department will present its One-Act play “...And Others” Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 9 a.m. at the CHS theater as part of the Region VI One-Act play competition. The club will also give a performance of the play Sunday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m.

Kelby Hicks is Chronicle intern

Custer Jr./Sr High School (CHS) senior Kelby Hicks is the newest addition to the Custer County Chronicle staff. Her duties will include school and sports coverage, as well as photography and other general duties. 
Hicks was born in Sioux Falls. Her education started in Pierre. In 2008 she visited the Black Hills with her family and fell in love with the area. After a couple of years her mother decided to move to the Black Hills. 

Senior project ‘Stops the Bleed’

Custer High School senior Shelby Gramkow recently helped train staff members at Custer High School, Custer Elementary School, Custer YMCA Preschool, Hermosa School and Elk Mountain School in “Stop the Bleed,” a nationwide campaign that works with bystanders to become trained, equipped and impowered on how to stop an emergency bleed before professional help arrives. The training sessions were Gramkow’s senior project.
