Thompson pleads guilty to false statement

Former Custer credit union manager Darla Thompson appeared before a federal magistrate in Rapid City on Friday to enter a guilty plea to one of nearly a dozen federal charges that stood against her.

Minor injuries in Custer State Park wreck

A burned car and minor injuries were the result of a two-vehicle accident in Custer State Park last Thursday, Oct. 6.
Around 4 p.m. that day first responders were called to Hwy. 16 about two miles from the State Game Lodge for a report of two vehicles that had collided head on.
Custer County Sheriff’s Office deputy Steve Yenulonis said a 44-year-old Custer man driving a pickup crossed over the center line and collided with a Custer juvenile driving a small passenger car. After the collision the juvenile’s car caught on fire.

Another successful Roundup

The general public received another look at what it takes to round up 1,400 buffalo at last Friday’s annual Governor’s Buffalo Roundup in Custer State Park.
Last week, South Dakota’s Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) organized the 20,000 person event, the 57th of its kind.
Earlier in the week, Lydia Austin, GFP’s visitor’s services coordinator, noted she was watching the weather radar for rain, but this year’s roundup was rain-free and the Custer State Park venue showed an autumn underway, surrounded by yellow and orange-leafed trees.

County budget just under $12 million

Custer County will spend just under $12 million in 2023 after the county budget for next year was finalized at the Sept. 28 meeting of the Custer County Commission.
That figure is slightly higher than last year’s budget, which the commission said was largely due to giving county employee raises, as well as the rising cost of doing business, such as dramatic increase in fuel prices.

Native American Day Monday

Crazy Horse Memorial will once again celebrate Native American Day with a variety of activites at the memorial next Monday, Oct. 10.
The event will include hands on activities in the galleries of the Indian Museum of North America from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Native American Day program at 10 a.m. and a performance by the Bearsheart Family at 1:30 p.m.
Master of ceremonies for the program will be Dr. Sid Goss, professor emeritus at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

County DOE: Appraisals still lag behind market values

A familiar refrain was heard at the Sept. 28 meeting of the Custer County Commission, as the county’s director of equalization, Leah Vissia, told the commission that for the most part county assessments were still well below market value of property in Custer County. By law, the county must assess property at 100 percent of what is known as “full and true,” the market value of the home. If the county does not do that, the state comes in and gives a factor that it multiplies the assessed value times to make sure the property is being taxed at the appropriate value.

Harvest Moon Festival Saturday

Bracketing the end to summer tourism and the Buffalo Roundup, the second annual Harvest Moon Festival is this Saturday, Oct. 8, at Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort.
This yearly hoorah is hosted by Custer Hospitality and will celebrate with a full day of events.
From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., games, live music and food vendors will be taking over the campground.
The festival is family-friendly and includes a bouncy house for children, and a fall carnival theme with cotton candy, popcorn, a pumpkin patch and hay rides.

Buffalo Roundup this weekend

The Governor’s Buffalo Roundup starts this week with essentially something for everyone as there’s the roundup, an arts and crafts festival and the Crazy Horse Volksmarch. 
 
Custer State Park’s Buffalo Roundup is now a 57-year tradition where the public is invited to watch as approximately 1,300 buffalo are herded into corrals.
 
South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks uses the help of many local citizens on horseback and in designated vehicles to run the dense herd of buffalo. 
 

Hartmann resigns as city planning head

The City of Custer will soon be without a planning administrator after current planning administrator Tim Hartmann’s resignation was accepted at the Sept. 19 meeting of the Custer City Council.
The resignation came after a quick regular meeting that was followed by an executive session, after which the council accepted the resignation.
Reached after the meeting, Hartmann said his last official day with the city is Oct. 7, although he spent his last full day in the office Sept. 23. Hartmann said he was leaving the city to “pursue a new opportunity.”

It’s homecoming week in the Custer School District

Custer High School’s 2022 homecoming is full of events from Oct. 3 through Oct. 7.
The Wildcat’s coronation ceremony is 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3 at Custer High School.
Royalty candidates were announced and in the running for homecoming queen are Ally Cass, Ramsey Karim, Allie Kelley and Alice Sedlacek.
The homecoming king candidates are Blake Boyster, Jackson Drew, Remington Miklos and Landon Woodward.
Junior royalty include Ava Jaure, Kian Rusch, JoJo Larsen, Jackson Wiles, Chloe Carder and Sam Gaulke.
