Entries sought for parade of lights

The 33rd Annual Custer Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3, at 5:30 pm.
The annual parade of lights signals the kick-off of the holiday season in the southern Hills. After the parade, people can attend the Memorial Tree Lighting Ceremony at Way Park. The parade will begin at 8th Street and Mt. Rushmore Road and end at Way Park on 4th Street and Mt. Rushmore Road.

City won’t allow cannabis cultivation, manufacturing

Seven months after indefinitely tabling an application for a medical cannabis facility that would have been housed in what is now home to The Hills Self Storage and Black Hills Federal Credit Union, the Custer City Council at a special Nov. 10 meeting voted unanimously to amend the city’s Ordinance No. 873, which contains provisions for cannabis establishments within the city.
The item was originally on the city’s Nov. 7 regular meeting agenda, but when the issue came up at that time, it was tabled until the special Nov. 10 meeting.

Commission gives permit refunds

A Custer County couple has been granted a $1,000 refund on late fees they paid for lack of permits for two cabins they placed on their Custer Highlands property last year.
The refund came via the Custer County Commission at its Nov. 9 meeting after the couple, Jeffrey and Heather Rodriguez, told the commission they incurred the fees due to “malinformation” given to them by the Custer County Planning Office.

County voters lean GOP

For anyone who knows the political makeup of Custer County, the results of last Tuesday’s voting by county voters should come as no surprise. As one of the most Republican counties in the state, voters here tended to support GOP candidates more and Democrat candidates less than voters statewide. And, when it came to the two statewide ballot questions, Custer County voters also chose the more conservative of the options.

South Dakota continues hunting heritage

South Dakota’s tradition of opening day for pheasant hunting began Oct. 15 and the fall and winter hunting seasons continue next for deer (opened Nov. 12), mountain lion (Dec. 26)  and ice fishing which will begin mid-December.
South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks’ communication manager, Nick Harrington, said Custer County has a variety of places for outdoor hunting and fishing sports.

Custer schools honor local veterans

Custer’s elementary, junior and senior high schools presented their 28th annual Veterans Day program last Thursday with a very special purpose at heart — to give a thank you to those who have served our country in military service.
The event took place Nov. 10 at the Armory, which was packed with patrons anticipating the coming production.
The audience stood for the American Legion Post No. 46’s Presentation of Colors, National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance.

Incumbents win commission race

Three current members of the Custer County Commission will all return for another four-year term after receiving the most votes in a four-way race in yesterday’s General Election.
Republican incumbents Mike Linde, Jim Lintz and Craig Hindle were the top finishers in the race, gaining 3,054, 2,904 and 2,797 votes respectively. Independent challenger Kevin Rosse finished fourth with 1,500 votes.

The Custer County Chronicle and Custer Area Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to plan an exterior Christmas decorating contest, in which we want you, the reader, to submit either your decorated home or the home of an outdoor display you enjoy.

Snowplow naming contest returns

Over the past two winters, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) engaged with thousands of South Dakotans in Name the Snowplow Contests. Heavy snow and high winds were no match for cleverly named snowplows that efficiently cleared the state’s highway system.
 

Local Veterans Day events this week

Veterans Day is this week and Custer County will have a variety of events to honor those who served the United States through military service.
Custer School District’s 28th annual Veterans Day program will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Armory.
Presented by Custer students and American Legion Post #46, the program will consist of a Presentation of Colors by the local Veterans Honor Guard, patriotic songs performed by Custer’s Elementary students and Custer’s High School band.
