Volleyball stays undefeated

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team stayed undefeated with a resounding 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-16) victory against the Belle Fourche Broncos in a game on Sept. 6. — the Rangers first game in Gins Gym that season and the first home game in Hill City Gins’ Gym since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Rangers set the tone early, getting the first points of the game. The Broncos, though, kept it close early in the first and third sets with a resounding dominiation by the Rangers in the second set.

Rangers aim high

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team is aiming high.

The team lost just two seniors to graduation, yet the two were strong players, said Lindsy Wathen, head coach. The team is looking to fill the gaps the pair left in the front row and go further into post season play this year.

Ranger girls revel in state tournament opportunity

For the first time in 23 years, the Hill City Rangers girls basketball team is going to the state tournament.
 
While the team hasto wait to play its games until the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, the team is loose but focused as it preps.
 

Weiss starts season with title

Sophomore Braden Weiss started this year’s wrestling season with a bang by winning the 120-pound weight class at last weekend’s season-opening Custer Invitational.

Weiss started the tournament with a bye before defeating John Jeffery of Spearfish by major decision 15-2. Weiss followed that up with a 12-2 major decision victory over Ryne Bostrom of Sturgis 12-2 before defeating Maverick Simons, also of Sturgis, 4-2 for the tournament title.

Wrestlers have goals

Despite losing three seniors who were a big part of setting the culture in the wrestling room to graduation, Hill City High School wrestling coach Nick Ferguson said he expects returners such as Jeremy Gillaspie, Jaxon Johnson and Kollby Houdek to fill leadership roles and keep and maintain the expectations of the programs wrestling season unfolds this winter.

Boys basketball to look to vets to lead

Hill City Rangers boys basketball team Nate Bayne is ready for his first season as head coach.

The Rangers have their first game Dec. 13 against Belle Fourche at home at 7 p.m., and, right now, that’s what they’re focused on.

“We just want to get better every day,” Bayne said. “That’s our main goal this season.”

Bayne said they lost some key players last season; however, he looks to veteran leadership to lead the way.

Girls cross country takes second at state

All of the hard work put in by the Hill City Rangers cross country team paid off as the girls team took second place in Class A at the 2019 South Dakota State Cross Country Meet held in Huron on Saturday.

The team finished with a total of 69 points, while eighth-grader Abby Cutler came in second place with a time of 19:00.93.

For the boy’s team, Luke Rupert, also an eighth grade student, came in 41st place as the school’s lone male runner.

Run Crazy Horse runners set the pace

The Run Crazy Horse Marathon and Half- Marathon was held Sunday.

The race started at Crazy Horse Memorial. Participants wound their way through the Black Hills before finishing on Main Street in Hill City. It was a beautiful, sun-shiny day with perfect temperatures for running.

Over 1,000 people from 45 states, Canada and the United Kingdom registered for the race, said Emily Wheeler, race organizer.

Rangers tournament win caps winning week

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team capped of a week where it went 8-0 — including six wins on Saturday — with a win at the Belle Fourche Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

To start off the day, the team beat Douglas, Lyman and Hot Springs. It played Belle Fourche to make into the semifinals, where it was matched up against St. Thomas More.
