Praise to those who brought the B21

Whew! What a great week for America! I know the national news is depressing and getting more and more depressing all the time. It all reminds me of that old Hee Haw song, “Gloom, despair and agony on me.” Last week’s depressing item was having the Keystone XL Pipeline getting the final nail in the coffin. It is graveyard dead now.

The state’s newest veteran cemetery

Greetings! I wanted to report back to you about the dedication of South Dakota’s first and only state veterans’ cemetery. Yep, Marcia and I had the distinct honor and privilege to attend the dedication on Memorial Day.  
How did this happen?  What is the back story?  Well, in our great state, we do have a national cemetery located next to I-90 just before arriving in Sturgis, going north from Rapid City. This cemetery is a pristine resting place with the sacred ground of our fallen heroes.

Summertime and fighting complacency

It’s finally summer! I’m sure most of us have been busy with our yards and putting in our gardens. My husband and I had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend last week. We went up to the Black Hills National Cemetery on Sunday and Monday went to the Memorial Service on Monday at Memorial Park in Rapid City. We are so grateful to the men and women who have served our country. Each of us has a responsibility to help maintain that freedom they fought and died for.

Summer reading contest starts June 7

“One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by”  - Jeannette Walls author of “The Glass Castle.”
The Magical Masquerade Community Evening was great fun and the butterbeer was definitely a hit! Thank you to everyone who attended and for all volunteers that helped. We could not do the things we plan without you!
The Kids’ Summer Reading Contest begins Monday, June 7. Please register at the library. We will have weekly prizes and grand prizes.

Biden keeps giving away money

Greetings! I hope you’re not standing when you read this because you’re going to fall over. Please take a moment and have a seat.  Just when Gov. Noem stopped the extra $300 per week for the unemployed, this happened! President Biden is going to send the parents of nearly every child under age 6 $300 per month; ages 6-18 $250 per month, both payments starting in July 2021. Un-blankety blank-believable!

I’m a big fan of the Irish goodbye.

For those of you who don’t know, the Irish goodbye is when you up and leave an event or party without telling anyone. For me, it’s my preferred way of saying goodbye because, quite frankly, I hate saying goodbye.

Well, Hill City, I’m not going to give you the Irish goodbye and I will say goodbye to you all. I am leaving the Prevailer. My last day is Friday, and you can consider this my retirement from journalism.

What a school year!

What a year! The story of this year actually begins last March when COVID-19 caused school to close down. We came together as a school family to provide distance learning as best we could. In the course of days, we recreated the educational process. We focused on “Controlling the Controllables”.

It’s gonna be a good summer

I went on a trip last weekend to Colorado. That’s right: for the first time since 2019 I left the state of South Dakota. In the words of Jeb Bush: “Please clap.”

It’s funny, when most people go to Colorado it’s to escape the city and go out into nature. For us, it’s the opposite. We go to Colorado so we can feel like we’re back in a city. While I was there, I was able to do some pretty cool things. While I did go for a nice little hike, by far my favorite thing that I got to do was eat 11 tacos.
