New plumbing company in Hill City, Keystone

Kelly Hughes always wanted to own his own business, but in the Kansas City, Mo., area it was really not an option since there were too many big competitors. However, moving to Hill City made it possible for him to start Hughes Plumbing of Hill City, LLC (HPHC).
Hughes and his family started visiting the Black Hills in 2017, staying at Robins Roost in Hill City.

Ambulance auction set for July 12

Get ready, Hill City. The much-anticipated Supporters for the Hill City Ambulance auction begins at 6 p.m. July 12.
The auction is virtual and all items can be viewed on the  McPherson Auction and Realty website. People can register before the auction is posted. Once they have a bidding number it can be used on the McPherson site to bid on any of their auctions.

New RV campground outside Hill City

Nestled between two hills across from the old sawmill is the brand new Black Hills Sawtooth Campground & Cabins (BHSCC) run by Aaron Olson. 
Olson, a long-time local to the Black Hills area, has his own excavation business in Rapid City where he digs foundations and works with sewer and water systems among other things. 
“I started in that, and then I went into vacation homes as kind of a side hobby,” said Olson. 
Through this, he gained experience in entertaining guests. However, Olson always wanted a campground. 

Tension erupts over Harney lot

Tension between Keystone trustees rose again at the July 5 Keystone Town Board meeting. The latest squabble came over what to do with the Harney Street lot.
Despite a vote at the previous meeting which gave authority to spend no more than $2,000 on fencing for the lot, trustees were not in sync about how to use the lot.

Teacher shortage hits Hill City

The teacher shortage across the state has already affected the Hill City School District’s  ability to hire locally. Now visa and immigration delays may affect when the new science teacher arrives. 
Superintendent Blake Gardner discussed the issue with the school board at the Hill City School District Board of Education meeting July 10.

Giving seniors independence through public transportation

Transportation is a vital part of life.
“People who don’t have transportation have to rely on family, friends or their church to get to their appointments and so forth,” said Dale Householder.
Another option is some form of public transportation. 
Years ago there used to be a taxi cab service in Hill City that fulfilled this need. According to Householder, it was very successful. However, the gentleman who ran it had to stop due to health issues and it shut down shortly after that. 

Waltz into this Year’s Flower Show

The Hill City Evergreen Garden Club hosts its annual Flower Show July 22 at the Boys and Girls Club Auditorium. This year’s theme is “The Waltz of the Flowers.” 
Visitors to the show will see the way flowers are perfect partners in the performance of dance. Flowers work harmoniously bringing not only a joyful vision but a  lovely fragrance, and an enhancement to any experience as well.

State population to top one million by 2030

A trend of surging domestic migration to South Dakota that began during the COVID-19 pandemic could put the state’s total population above one million residents as early as 2030.
That growth pattern runs counter to other Midwestern states and highlights the fact that more people are moving to South Dakota than leaving, and that women in the Mount Rushmore State are giving birth at a greater rate than the national average.

Fatal stabbing outside Keystone

Twenty-year-old Caesar Angelo Duarn is in Pennington County Jail charged with murder in the second degree after an altercation that left one man dead just outside of  Keystone July 1.
Duran’s charges stem from a fatal stabbing along Hwy. 16 near the Keystone Wye.
