Ret. Col. Marty Mahrt, an accomplished U.S. Air Force pilot, was shot down and rescued in 1966 during the Vietnam War. Years later, as the war was ending in 1975, the Purple Heart winner from Custer helped evacuate the U.S. Embassy in Saigon.
A grant from the Sioux Falls-based Mary Chilton Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Foundation will help the South Dakota Air and Space Foundation preserve and tell Mahrt’s story.

Saturday, Nov. 14
11:28 a.m.: A deputy helped a motorist after they slid into the ditch along Hwy. 385 near Pringle.
8:48 p.m.: More slide-off action happened near Stockade Lake involving a truck and trailer. No injuries resulted there.
Sunday, Nov. 15
12:50 a.m.: Deputies checked the welfare of a person on Lower French Creek Road. The person turned out to be all right.
11:22 a.m.: A deputy assisted Hermosa marshal’s units with a possible domestic dispute on Hermosa’s 5th Street. The incident was eventually resolved by separating those involved.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — Work was stalled on the digging of the elevator shaft at Custer County Courthouse after the odor of fuel was noted while digging below the basement footers ... The Custer City Council approved a new street light at the intersection of Woodlawn Meadows and Highway 16 ...  The state Wildland Fire Suppression division was able to control a wildfire after a prescribed burn at Custer State Park got out of control. The fire burned about 75 acres before it was contained.
