Two of the Keystone Museum’s most important women have been awarded the West River Historical Society’s Sago Conservation Merit award.

Bonnie Zebroski, the Keystone Area Historical Society (KAHS) board treasurer and Bonita Ley, a retired teacher who began the Living History School program, were nominated for the award.

This is the third year the Sago Award has been given.

According to Joanna Jones of the West River Historical Conference, the award began after Bobbi Sago’s unexpected passing.

Game, Fish & Parks Commission voted to raise the mountain lion kill limit to 50 ... Clifford and Christine Mumm, new owners of the Kleemann House, were denied permission to put a porch on the front of their building by the S.D. Department of Transportation.

Saturday, Sept. 19
12:21 a.m.: A mysterious 911 hang-up call came from the north 6th Street area of Custer. Just as mysteriously, nothing and no one were found in the area. 
7:33 a.m.: A deputy kept the peace on Freeland Drive while disputed property was retrieved. 
7:58 a.m.: A “suspicious or abandoned” vehicle was reportedly parked on Medicine Mountain Road. A deputy found that “abandoned” was the correct answer. 
8:42 a.m.: A deputy assisted with a vehicle identification number inspection on Grey Rocks Road. 

Old letters a window to another time

A local man shared with the Chronicle some letters from the late 1800s which were in his possession. They range from the mundane (a note about lumber, a note to pay for something that cost $11, plus interest) to a letter that explains a situation that sounds like a forced marriage. 

Fall into reading at the library

The library’s hours will continue to be Monday - Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Curbside service is still available, please 574-4529 for assistance.

The library will be closed Oct. 12.

The library will be hosting the annual Read for the Record Event Oct. 29 at 9:30 a.m. in the Kid’s Annex. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Celebrating 10 years

In a year filled with much uncertainty, it’s good to celebrate the accomplishments of the community.

One such celebration was held on Oct. 3 as the South Dakota State Railroad Museum (SDSRM) celebrated its 10th anniversary with a soiree and a ribbon cutting on its grounds.

“Thank you so much for everyone being here tonight,” said Rick Mills, director of the SDSRM, to the roughly three dozen people gathered on the lawn in front of the museum. “I can’t express our appreciation for everybody who is here tonight.”

Get supercharged with BOLT

With all the challenges of the past six or seven months, many are ready for a recharge, and that is where BOLT comes in. BOLT is a new Bible-based program for children, which also includes a hands-on life skills component each week. The program began on Sept. 23 at 3:15 p.m. at the Little White Church, but all community children grades K-5 are still invited to join in the learning and fun and be on their way to being “supercharged for life.”

Frye-Mueller, Oakes seek Senate seat

Voters who head to the polls Nov. 3 (or vote early absentee) have their choice between a Republican and Libertarian candidate for District 30 State Senate this year, as current state Representative Julie-Frye Mueller will square off with Gideon Oakes. The winner will serve a two-year term.
Julie Frye-Mueller, 57, has served four years in the House of Representatives and decided to attempt to switch from the House to Senate after she was asked to do so by former Sen. Lance Russell who decided not to seek re-election.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — A Pringle couple was arrested and pleaded not guilty to possessing 74 weapons illegally and also growing marijuana at their home ... A ruling by the S.D. Supreme Court determined the state is obligated to control black-tailed prairie dogs from migrating to private lands and that the state must pay for any damage the prairie dogs may have caused on private land ... County fire coordinator Ned Westphal said some fire departments were not compliant with federal regulations, which could cost both the departments and the county funding.
