— Hill City was named the most beautiful town in South Dakota by viewfinder, a travel blog owned by Expedia. The blog detailed the town’s start as a frontier town and later as a railroad stop. The viewfinder’s mission was to pinpoint the most beautiful places to travel in every state that may not be on travelers’ radar.

Friends of the Library hosts traveler

Adventure traveler, author and filmmaker Bruce Junek spoke at the March 9 Friends of the Hill City Library meeting. 
Junek shared photographs and stories of his vast explorations throughout Asia, Central and South America and Africa.
His travels are unique, almost all having occurred simply, traveling by bicycle with his wife, Tass. The two found off the beaten paths that took them to remote villages and isolated landscapes. 

Backers of Native education reform will press forward

The latest setback in a bid to create state-funded Lakota immersion schools in South Dakota will not deter Native American educators from pursuing that vision in the future, according to one of the proposal’s key supporters.
State Sen. Troy Heinert, D-Mission, expressed disappointment after the March 2 failure of a bill to fund charter schools focused on Oceti Sakowin language and culture in the state’s public school system, especially since he is leaving the state legislature after this session.

Foundation awards first funds

The Hill City Community Foundation savings account began as a direct result of many people, including former Hill City resident Bob Sutton, who still considers Hill City home.
“I have great memories here. My kids will tell you they can sing the Hill City fight song. It was the first song they ever learned,” said Sutton, as he shared memories of buildings, his graduating class and of being a Ranger.

— The Evergreen Garden Club’s “Backyard Birding in the Black Hills” seminar had a packed house. The speaker was Maggie Engler from the Black Hills Raptor Center, who presented the statistics that 65 million Americans feed birds with an annual outlay of 3.8 billion dollars on feed, feeders, baths and accessories ... The city approved a resolution authorizing the establishment of a Business Improvement Board (BID) for Business Area 1.
