Dusty Johnson visits Krull’s Market

Congressman Dusty Johnson came to Hill City this week to discuss supply chain issues that still plague the region.
Johnson toured Krull’s Market with owner Eric Lind. Lind described the challenges his store has faced since the pandemic started. The fill rate in the  store is 65 percent. That means Lind is unable to get 35 percent of the goods he and his customers expect. He also said it takes a lot to keep the shelves filled.
“People have gotten accustomed to ‘I just have to take this’” versus a specific brand they may be looking for, he said.

— On Tuesday, Feb. 21 the Pretty Flower Fire was spotted and grew to about 40 acres within a couple of hours due to the wind. Around 20-30 resisdents were asked to voluntarily evacuate but were able to return shortly after. The fire was determined to be human-caused by a slashpile burned a couple weeks earlier that started back up due to the wind and dry receptive fuels on the ground. About 75 firefighters were on the fire from local, state and federal.

Library receives Exemplary Status

Yesterday was to be the day the Hill City Public Library received recognition in Pierre for attaining Exemplary Status from the South Dakota Library Association.
Due to COVID-19, the event was cancelled, but that doesn’t mean the Exemplary status was not achieved. The award was sent in the mail. There are three categories—Essential, Enhanced and the highest, Exemplary. Out of the eight libraries seeking a level of certification this year, only two were Exemplary: Watertown and Hill City.

Applications, donations being accepted

The Hill City Area Community Foundation (HCACF) is already accepting applications. Despite the fact that the program only began last November it has amassed approximately  $7,000 to award to nonprofit organizations serving the Hill City area.  Applicants must be non-profit, school, church or government related. 
Towns with these types of accounts have done all sorts of things for community organizations. 

Crackerbarrel set for Feb. 12 at Super 8

A crackerbarrel featuring all three South Dakota State Legislature District 30 representatives will take place next Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Super 8 Conference Room. The event is sponsored by the Hill City Prevailer News.
Reps. Tim Goodwin and Trish Ladner, along with Sen. Julie Frye-Mueller, will all be on hand to discuss what is happening with this year’s legislature as well as to answer questions.

Still time to flood town hall with memories

The Town of Keystone, along with the Keystone Area  Chamber of Commerce and the Keystone Historical Society, are planning a 50th Anniversary celebration and remembrance ceremony to commemorate the 1972 flood and the origins of the town’s inception.

— After a short battle with cancer, Mayor David Gray of Hill City passed away at the Hospice House in Rapid City Feb. 3. Hill City city hall closed in observance of Gray’s funeral ... In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Jesse and Sherlee Renteria shared the story of how they met, saying it all started with a whistle. They were married at the ages of 16 and 14, and their marriage lasted 56 years and beyond.
