A journey of love

For Harvey and Nancy Lembke, the journey of love started early. They first met in Nancy’s hometown of Waseca, Minn., when she was just 14. Nancy and her friend were walking around downtown when they met Harvey and his friend. At the age of 16, Harvey was admittedly there to pick up girls since he considered the girls in far away towns to be better looking.

— The Hill City Senior Center craft group decided to contribute to Cover Me Purple, a local program whose goal is to bring awareness to Shaken Baby Syndrome and help its prevention. Thirteen members of the craft group met and completed 26 fleece blankets for the cause ... The Hill City High School Drama Department was one of two one-act performances selected to advance from the regional level to state.

Crackerbarrel set for Feb. 12 at Super 8

A crackerbarrel featuring all three South Dakota State Legislature District 30 representatives will take place next Saturday, Feb. 12, at 4 p.m. at Custer Senior Center. The event is sponsored by the Custer County Chronicle.
Reps. Tim Goodwin and Trish Ladner, along with Sen. Julie Frye-Mueller, will all be on hand to discuss what is happening with this year’s legislature as well as to answer questions.

CSP campground is a bad idea

First off I would like to thank all of you who have emailed me and other legislators regarding HB1048.  This bill would negatively affect both Custer State Park and the wildlife environment that is established there.
To build a $10 million campground on Wildlife Loop and negatively impact what this park is known for is not worth it. People come from all over the world to visit this wildlife park.

Live on Stage — a cure for the winter blues

The newly-named Live On Stage had its second event of  the 2021 season. Three opening acts took the stage prior to the paid performer, JJ Kent & Joe Miller.
One of those acts was  13-year-old Bodhi Linde, who many call a child prodigy. 
Bodhi began his musical career playing piano at age 9. He picked up the intricacies of the piano in 10 minutes and has been playing instruments from banjo to trumpet to guitar ever since. 
Bodhi has played locally with some great talent including Steve Thorpe, about whom he wrote a song. 

Holly House Bed and Breakfast has new owners

After years of traveling to South Dakota for work and vacations, Danny and Robin Martinez decided during the trials of 2020 that it was time to move. From Albuquerque, N.M., the Martinez family settled in Hill City right before school started with four of their children. In 2021, their other two children followed, and all six, ranging in age 6 to 20,  now live in Hill City.
