‘Altar Boyz’ delivers the laughs

Lacking in any real story line or character development, it would seem that “Altar Boyz” would fall flat as a musical comedy. However, the brilliant blend of mockery of religion and boy bands, well choreographed numbers and superb delivery by the actors is a sheer delight, with laughs from beginning to end.

Masks, vaccines optional in back-to-school plans

Back-to-school plans for this fall are taking shape in South Dakota and — so far, at least — it looks like most teaching will take place in person and masks and COVID-19 vaccinations will be optional for students, teachers and staff.
But safety protocols could change quickly as public school officials keep a close eye on whether the highly contagious COVID-19 delta variant takes hold in South Dakota, a state with low vaccination rates among children and young adults.

Celebrating a quarter-century

Sarah Rogers has been showing her art at Warrior’s Work & Ben West Gallery since the beginning of the gallery’s  25 year existence. And while most people would think a quarter century relationship would be fraught with ups and downs, Rogers claims “we haven’t had any downs.” 
Rogers, like every artist celebrating the gallery’s 25 year history, describes the owners, Randy Berger and Janna Emmel, as wonderful people.
“They take such good care of me. It’s been an amazing 25 years,” she said.

Lady riders rumble into Keystone

The seventh annual Deadwood Three Wheeler Rally made a pit stop in Keystone July 13. About 60 trikes made their way into town.
Keystone Chamber of Commerce director Robin Pladson worked with rally organizer Theresa Schanzenbach  to bring the riders to Keystone. Pladson also organized swag bags for attendees.
“The bags were taken up on Friday and riders received them when they registered,” said Pladson.
The Keystone stop was a “ladies only” ride to ride and shop. Many like Darla Sorrells of Arlington, Texas, were first time visitors to Keystone.

— Due to several setbacks and lack of community participation, the Heart of the Hills Logging Show was cancelled...Iron stomachs gathered at the Gaslight Restaurant for a wing eating contest. Proceeds went to the Ranger field renovation project. Luke Moore won the championship, eating 44 wings during the six-round competition that saw the wings get increasingly more spicy...The Hill City Arts Council and the Black Hills Film Festival were chosen to receive grants of $11,212 and $5,000, respectively, from the South Dakota Arts Council.

‘I love you, you’re perfect’ is perfect

The Black Hills Playhouse’s second summer show, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” is a hilarious intimate show that  delves into the intricacies of men and women as they navigate dating, marriage and relationships after divorce or the death of a spouse. Billed as a musical revue, the lyrics are witty, if not at times so accurate, as to leave you hysterically laughing.

Black Hills 100 creates tent city

Dozens of tents sprouted up like mushrooms last Tuesday at Trailside Park Resort  Campground on the south side of Hill City supported by a fleet of trucks, trailers, busses and staff which temporarily transformed the campground into a military-like encampment. By 8:30 the next morning the tent city and most of the other equipment were gone.
