A hidden piece of history near Deerfield

Located approximately one mile from the Kinney Canyon Walk In Fishery, off of Slate Prairie Road near Deerfield Reservoir, lies a hidden piece of history within the Black Hills National Forest. Built in 1879, Miller Cabin is one of the oldest structures left standing in the central Black Hills.
John A. Miller, who founded the town of Deerfield and owned much of the land in the area, bought the cabin. It had previously been owned by a rancher who let travelers use the cabin as lodging when passing through. 

Child care provider funding available

Additional funding to support child care programs and the families they serve is being made available, according to the Department of Social Services (DSS). 
“To help ensure child care services remain strong for South Dakota families, the Department of Social Services is investing additional funding in our providers,” said DSS cabinet secretary Laurie Gill. “These funds will help sustain the programs that support our families and communities.”

Pandemic weight gain leads to health concerns

Many Americans, including adults and children in South Dakota, have gained weight since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that has healthcare experts worried about the potential for long-term negative physical and mental health implications. 
The extended stress experienced since early 2020 is seriously affecting mental and physical health, including changes to weight, sleep patterns and alcohol use, according to an American Psychological Association study released in March. 

Mount Rushmore Half Marathon this weekend

Join us over the weekend of Sept. 17-18 to welcome runners competing in the annual Mount Rushmore Half Marathon hosted by Vacation Races. Founded in 2012, Vacation Races hosts half marathons across the country at our nation’s national parks.
Race weekend starts Friday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m. Throughout the day, runners will visit the Race Expo at Ghost Canyon Getaway to get their race packets for the weekend. Runners are permitted to get their race packets until 7 p.m.

Butterflies to be released for a cause

A butterfly release to benefit the Front Porch Coalition will take place at Watson Park at the Keystone Hometown Celebration on Sep 18.
 A butterfly release is a symbolic way to release loss or let go of any emotional  burden or trauma that no longer serves a purpose in a person’s  life. Many also participate in a release to provide a sense of community or to see the many butterflies simultaneously let go.

Donations sought for vets Christmas shop

The Hill City Senior Citizens, in conjunction with the American Legion, are once again sponsoring the Christmas Gift Shop for Veterans.  
The Christmas Gift Shop is an opportunity for veterans in the VA Hospital and the State Veterans’ Home in Hot Springs to send gifts to members of their families at Christmas.

GFP takes aim at firearms complex

The S.D. Game Fish and Parks (GFP) Rapid City Firearms Complex is beginning to take shape. A recently held on-site presentation showed the vision for the 400-acre site 10 miles north of I-90 on Elk Vale Road. 
The raw land, which was purchased for $1 million, boasts a rolling topography essential to create interesting sight lines for shooters and natural ridges for collecting bullets. 

Walking tacos for a cause

There will be a walking taco fundraiser for Jeff Anderson this Thursday, Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hill City High School Commons. Cost is $5 per taco.
All proceeds will go to Anderson to help with ongoing medical bills.

Mickelson Trail getting makeover

The Mickelson Trail is getting a huge makeover. Trail surfacing will take place July 12 through Dec. 31 starting at Rochford and working to Custer. The trail will be open and passable, but users may encounter loose material and equipment.
The work is slated to be completed by year’s end, if not sooner.
Trail manager Dana Garry-Reiprich said riders on the Mickelson Trail can help workers by walking their bikes in the vicinity of the signs that say trail maintenance. This will also help them have a better experience on the trail.
