A recent donation from the Hill City Senior Center to the Keystone Senior Center and Social Club proves yet again that the two towns are one big, supportive community. 
The Hill City Senior Center donated the Sears Kenmore machine as a gift at the perfect time.
“We were just starting to look for a new or used one a couple of days earlier,” said Keystone Senior Center representative Robin Pladson.

Noem wins book award

Josh Noem, son of Rollie and Peg Noem of Hill City, was the recipient of first place in the 2021 CMA Book Awards for his novel “The End of Ending.” It is described as “a novel about baseball, beer and love that is stronger than death.”
Noem utilized South Dakota towns as names for his characters and features a main character from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

The importance of communication

My first grade son sent me his first ever email last week. It simply read, “hi dad.” It was surprisingly significant as a milestone in his (and my) life. As a school, we want to do our part to guarantee that our kids possess all of the 21st century skills that will make them successful in whatever field they choose to pursue.

Convention of States rally held

Mt. Rushmore National Monument was buzzing with energy and patriotism as a group of Convention of States (COS) supporters gathered for a freedom rally and parade Saturday, Sept. 25. 
 Nearly 50 citizens from across western South Dakota spent the afternoon together to share a meal and give updates on local progress for their grassroots efforts in promoting Convention of States Action. 

Endurance marches into Hill City

The Black Hills Veteran Endurance March took place last week. The four-day, 110-mile hike  from Edgemont to Deadwood along the Mickelson Trail attracted about 25 walkers. 
“I did my first one two years ago,” said Chris Cooper, S.D. state leader of Mission 22. Mission 22 dedicates each leg of the hike to a different cause. The section from Pringle to Hill City was dedicated to servicemen and women who lost their lives overseas while the section from Hill City to Rochford was dedicated to those currently serving. 

Strong stances for and against state’s bounty program

A former South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) leader with vast experience in wildlife management has expressed strong disagreement with current GFP leadership on whether a state predator bounty program protects young pheasants or is the right way to get youths involved in outdoor activities.
In an online panel discussion hosted by South Dakota News Watch on Sept. 15, former GFP secretary and commissioner John Cooper said the Nest Predator Bounty Program enacted by Gov. Kristi Noem in 2019 and continued since then does not belong in South Dakota.

Mill and overlay on Hwy. 40

The South Dakota Department of Transportation began a mill and overlay project on S.D. Hwy. 40 starting Sept. 17. The project will begin east of Keystone and run for one mile.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided through the project with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. Delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours. The contractor will be working weekdays only for the duration of the project.
Motorists are advised to travel 35 miles per hour or the posted speed limit if it is less.

Why Smokey is important to the HIll City Rangers

A Smokey Bear video is making its way around Hill City and Facebook. The video was created as part of a larger story South Dakota Public Broadcasting did about the significance of Smokey Bear to Hill City.
“We have a couple celebrities with Mr. Schrier and coach Eckert,” said superintendent Blake Garner, who placed a link to the video in his superintendent newsletter on the district’s website.

Author with Hill City ties writes book

When Jessica Vitalis attended high school in Hill City in the ’90s, she already had an unquenchable desire for books. Her mother, local business owner Carolyn Stout, had fostered a great love for books to give her both stability in an uncertain environment and knowledge to broaden Vitalis’ future. 
The new release, titled “The Wolf’s Curse,” takes the traditional concept of the Grim Reaper and transforms it for young readers.

The South Dakota Retailers Association (SDRA) is seeking nominations for the South Dakota Retailer of the Year, Restaurant of the Year and Community Service Awards.
Since 1982, the South Dakota Retailers Association has presented awards to recognize excellence in business and community service. Each January individuals and families who own or operate outstanding businesses are honored during the Association’s annual banquet in Pierre.
