Former FLDS compound property listed for sale

The former Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) compound is once again for sale, only this time it’s not being sold at auction—it’s being sold on the market for an asking price of $6.9 million.
Faith Lewis of Lewis Realty in Custer, along with Eric Lewis, also of Lewis Realty, are the listing agents on the property, which was put on the market May 1. The property, called Red Canyon Community, has received a lot of inquiries, Faith Lewis said, while cautioning tours aren’t being given to just anyone who is curious and wants to see the property.

Council approves forestry plan

An updated Community Forestry Plan for the City of Custer was unanimously adopted at the May 2 meeting of the Custer City Council,  a plan that includes recommendations for tree planting and care in the city, tree management on city rights of way and properties, budget investments and pursuing fire hazard reductions and a cooperative community wildfire protection plan with a wildland-urban interface. A presentation of the plan was presented by Dave Thom, a member of the city’s Park, Recreation and Forestry Committee board.

Dishing up the Chicken Soup

Two different authors from the same city being published in a collection of short stories and essays is probably not all that unusual, but when that city is the town of Custer (population 22-hundred-something, depending on which side of town the sign is on) it’s something to write about. When the latest edition of the popular line of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books comes out next month it will contain stories from two Custer writers who have both been published in earlier editions of the series.

School Board celebrates/marks completion of Hermosa project

A major milestone was celebrated Monday in the nearly five-year effort to build a new school at Hermosa. The May meeting of the Custer School District Board of Education held at Hermosa was attended by several representatives of Dean Kurtz Construction and Architects Inc. who gave a final update on construction of the new $14 million facility built over the last two years on the west side of the existing K-8 school.
It will be the last meeting attended by Steve Burgess and project superintendent Dan Geppert of Kurtz Construction and architects Jeremy Altman and Jordan Burbach.

Dawn Murray is interim chamber director

The Custer Area Chamber of Commerce has announced Dawn Murray has been named interim executive director of the chamber.
“It is with delight we  announce that Dawn Murray, a longtime employee of the chamber, will serve as interim executive director for the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce while the board considers the best future direction of the chamber,” the chamber board announced in a press release. “She has grown into this position, and we look forward to her continued leadership as interim director.

Cleanup on Allen Gulch

Terri Grunendike was named personal representative for the estate of Peggy Henson. Henson is deceased and was the owner of the property of 439 Allen Gulch Road in Hill City, a house in which criminal activity escalated earlier this year.
 The application for formal probate and  for the appointment of a personal representative application was filed March 2.
A hearing was scheduled March 14 to determine heirs and  to appoint a personal representative.

Education, communication key with OHVs

A wrap-up of  agreements and commitments made by organizations that participated in an off-highway vehicle (OHV) implementation meeting revealed some recurring themes.  
The Zoom meeting was held April 28. It prioritized the  short-term, mid-term and long-term commitments that participating  groups would work toward creating a better environment for OHV use in the Black Hills National Forest (BHNF). 

Bridge work cancels Trolley on the Trails

This year’s Trolley on the Trails will not take place according to Dana Reiprich, trail manager of the Mickelson Trail. The event is being canceled due to some bridge work on a bridge north of Hill City. 
Last fall while working on the bridges it was determined that a pipe cap needed to be replaced. That cap is a piece of the under structure of the bridge. The bridge is still able to hold normal traffic of horses, pedestrians and cyclists, however, trolleys weigh considerably more and are too load bearing on the bridge to operate safely. 

Shot, discus space sought at Memorial Park

During the Park Board meeting April 19, Hill City High School head track coach Joe Noyes approached the board with a proposal to add a shot put and discus space to Memorial Park. The current setup at the track complex does not have the necessary space for these events. As a result, Hill City is unable to host track meets.
