Arise USA bus tour comes to Keystone

The Keystone City Park will be the place to celebrate family, faith and freedom on Sunday, July 4 when it becomes the next stop on a nationwide bus tour called Arise USA. A cowboy church service and two rallies featuring speakers and music are part of a grassroots effort to restore constitutional liberties and the place of God across the nation.  

Hill City will shine on July 3

As we look forward to our country’s Independence Day celebration, the Hill City Chamber of Commerce and numerous interested Hill City residents hope to make Hill City shine on July 3 with a Star Spangled Independence Holiday Celebration. All day long there will be something for all ages including a parade, food, music and crafts.

Art gems come to Hill City

The 2021 Sculpture in the Hills Show and Sale featured a who’s who of artists from multiple locations and local art aficionados.
The artist’s reception, held June 18, was an opportunity to get to know some of the sculptors in a relaxed setting. Sue Quinlan from Boulder Colo., was inspired by her husband’s rock climbing to create rock climbing art, a  unique niche in the industry.

More trash talk in Keystone

The trash around Keystone took center stage once again at the June 16 Keystone Town Board meeting.
Although not on the official agenda the discussion came as a result of a “citizen request” for the city to look at street sweeping. The cost of a street sweeper is about $20,000 and according to superintendent of Public Works Jerry  Przybylski, the problem doesn’t lie with the town, it lies with the businesses along Main Street.

Bridge to nowhere on its way to somewhere

The Keystone Town Board took the first step to finally moving the town’s “Bridge to Nowhere.”
At its June 16 meeting the board accepted the proposal of Interstate Engineering to complete a survey and design for the “Bridge to Nowhere” to become a  pedestrian bridge at its new location in Watson park. The cost of the proposal is estimated to be $36,089. The proposal includes planning, surveying, submission of as-builts, designing of foundations and four soil borings,

Noem to continue pursuit of fireworks

Gov. Kristi Noem has signaled her intent to once again pursue fireworks at Mount Rushmore National Memorial July 3, despite a ruling in a lawsuit against her by a federal judge.
After the National Park Service (NPS) rejected the state’s request for the fireworks show, Noem filed a lawsuit against the NPS. On June 2 a federal judge ruled against Noem in the lawsuit.

Seay charged with kidnapping

The woman who became the subject of a statewide Amber Alert in late May has been bound over for trial on two counts of first degree kidnapping. Katrina Seay, 37, of Rapid City, appeared at a preliminary hearing Tuesday, June 15, in Custer County where evidence was presented before Seventh Circuit Judge Todd Hyronimus alleging she had illegally taken her two children from a Custer daycare May 29 and led law enforcement on a 350-mile chase before being apprehended hours later at a farm north of Mitchell.

No shots fired in Our Place brawl

A 39-year-old Custer man is facing five counts of simple assault as a result of an altercation outside a local restaurant last Wednesday morning, June 16.
It was 10:01 a.m. that day when 911 calls began to come in to Custer County Dispatch regarding a fight happening at Our Place Restaurant. Lt. Jeff McGraw of the Custer County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene at the restaurant within one minute, followed closely by Sheriff Marty Mechaley.

Demand load high for electricians

Like plumbers and other building trades, electricians are in high demand currently in the Southern Black Hills. However, the wait time to install an outlet or two might not be quite as long as finding a plumber to put in a new toilet.

City finalizes pot ordinance

As of July 2, anyone interested­ in opening a medical cannabis-related business will be able to submit a letter of interest to the city following the second reading of the city’s temporary ordinance regarding the issuance of local medical cannabis establishment permits and/or licenses.
