Hwy. 16 work begins

South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) crews began a bank stabilization project Sept. 6 on U.S. Hwy. 16.
 
The project takes place on the northside of Hwy. 16 near the intersection of Hill City-Keystone Rd.
 
The westbound lane is closed and westbound traffic will be directed to the center lane for the duration of the project.
 
Flaggers will be used intermittently throughout the project and slight delays can be expected.
 

Book sale set for this weekend

A “Patchwork of Books Sale” will be hosted by the Hill City Friends of the Library Saturday, Sept. 10, and Sunday, Sept. 11, in conjunction with the Quilt Show and Sale.  
 
The book sale will be held at the Hill City Public Library garage and the Kids’ Annex from 9 a.m. to  4 p.m. on both days.  
 
Book sales are the primary fundraiser for the Friends of the Library, and proceeds support Hill City Public Library programming and equipment needs.
 

Hill City’s quilt show this weekend

Fall isn’t the only one with dibs on color.
 
More than 300 quilts will rival Mother Nature Sept. 10-11 at the Hill City Quilt Show & Sale, now in its 23rd year.
 
The two-day indoor-outdoor event in the Hill City School Gym and on Main Street Hill City showcases a colorful array of unique quilts and fiber arts from around the region. 
 
The show is a collaboration between the Hill City Arts Council and the Heart of the Hills Quilters Guild. 
 

Man dies in motorcycle crash

One man died late Saturday night in a motorcycle crash north of Hill City.
 
The name of the person involved is not yet being released pending notification of the family members.
 
Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2012 Harley Davidson Touring motorcycle was southbound on U.S. Highway 385, when it crossed the centerline into the northbound lane and hit a guardrail. 
 
The 72-year-old driver was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

Continuing the history of the area feldspar industry

The first step in the feldspar milling process is to reduce the large pieces of ore to smaller pieces that in turn become the finished product for industry. After the initial mining process, the large pieces of ore are taken by truck to a “sorting bin.” This was a huge wooden structure built on an incline. The ore came down the wooden incline and passed through square openings onto wooden tables made of four-inch thick planks. Here the ore was further broken down by sledge hammers or four- pound hammers.

Custer Cares calls on participants

Custer Cares is a newly formed team who will commemorate those with Alzheimer’s disease at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Rapid City Sept. 24. And yet, Custer Cares is more than a fundraising group.
Not only is Custer Cares a real-time support for families currently experiencing a loved one’s dementia, the group is also a scaffold for grieving families affected by Alzheimer’s disease, and a group where volunteers are always welcome to offer time and care.

Poll shows recreational cannabis could fail in November

A statewide poll conducted in late July shows that support for legalizing recreational marijuana for adult use in South Dakota has waned in the past two years and also appears to indicate that a referendum on legalization in November could fail.
The poll of 500 registered voters in July found that 43.8 percent of respondents support legalization of recreational marijuana, and that 54.4 percent oppose legalization.

Shop, play and dance for a cause

The Heart of the Hills is featuring several community events Sept. 17.
 
The day begins with the Hill City annual rummage sale from 8 a.m to 2 p.m. The fundraiser is an opportunity to begin the holiday shopping season, find an unusual antique or gift, or just support a good local cause. 
 
In the evening, the Hill City Lions Club is hosting its monthly bingo game in the Boys & Girls Club.
 

Air tour plans for Mt. Rushmore

The National Park Service (NPS) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are seeking public comments on potential alternatives for an air tour management plan (ATMP) for Mount Rushmore National Memorial. 
 
Public comments will be accepted during a 30-day public scoping process Sept. 6 - Oct. 6.
 
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is one of 24 parks of the National Park System developing air tour management plans in cooperation with the FAA. 
 

Hill City quilt show set for Sept. 10-11

Organizers for the 2022 Quilt Show and Sale are hoping this year will be the breakthrough year of the show’s newest category: fiber arts. 
 
Fiber arts is a style of art that uses textiles such as fabric and yarn to create works of art that go beyond their components. 
 
Fibers can consist of cotton, linen, yarn, felt, hemp, string, ribbon, wool, silk, acrylic and rayon, to name a few.
