Sheriff feeling the heat of summer

Part 5 of a series of articles examining the numerous economic and lifestyle impacts of the current in-migration to Custer County.
 The interview for this article almost didn’t happen and for the very reasons the story was being written in the first place. One of the agencies experiencing the consequences of the rise in both visitors and new residents to this area is the Custer County Sheriff’s Office and last Friday was a prime example of the sometimes frenetic nature of the job.

School insurance will be renewed

Custer School District will have property and liability insurance coverage after July 1 following action taken at a special meeting held Monday at the district offices. The district’s coverage after the current policy’s expiration June 30 was left up in the air at the end of the regular June school board meeting June 14.

­­10 years ago, 2011 — ­­It was revealed that one of the participants in Hill City’s Wild West shoot-out had live ammunition in his gun, creating a “Nightmare on Elm Street” ... Veronica Schmidt was the new CEO/administrator of Custer Regional Hospital ... Downtown Custer was lit up on both sides of the street with new historic lights.

No Delta variant in state

The Delta variant, known as B.1.617.2 and first identified in India, has been detected in 49 states and Washington, D.C., according to GISAID, an independent data sharing initiative, and the Hawaii Department of Health.
A S.D. Department of Health spokesperson said there are no cases to report in the state at this time.

Small Pieces art winners announced

The Small Pieces Art Show, hosted by Art Expressions Gallery, closed with a reception on Saturday, June 19.  This is the fifth year of this show featuring original art works that must fit into an 8x8 inch space. At the closing reception the artists whose works earned ribbons were also presented over $500 in cash awards donated by local patrons of the arts.

Worker shortage common during tourist season

Eager to escape the constraints of the Covid pandemic, people are on the move across the country, many of them finding their way to the Black Hills. They are flooding the towns, anticipating a long-awaited vacation. According to some in the tourism industry, they have come early filling motels, campgrounds, restaurants and shops. Many employers, though enthusiastic about serving the tourists, are shorthanded and are looking for more help for the already overworked employees on the payroll.

Star-spangled celebration July 3

This weekend Hill City residents hope to make Hill City’s Star-Spangled Independence Holiday Celebration July 3 a memorable event for residents and visitors. All day long there will be something for all ages including a parade, food, music and crafts.
This special patriotic event evolved from conversations with chamber board members and others who wanted to see an event which shows the heart of patriotism in our local community.

Kayak businesses making a splash

No matter what your kayak or floating needs, Hill City can accommodate them. Two new watercraft rental businesses have opened this month, each with its own unique flair and services.
Black Hills Paddlesports offers floating enthusiasts a chance to rent inflatable kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and more, including a six-person paddleboard. Set across from the Mickelson trailhead near Tracy Park the adventure store also has pedal-assist ebikes for rent made available by Acme Bicycles of Rapid City.  
The store opened June 1.

Celebrating 126 years

About 50 parishioners and community members attended the June 26 Keystone Congregational United Church of Christ 125 +1 anniversary at Watson Park.
The event featured food, cameraderie, music, poetry, worship and rain.
“It may not be what we wanted, but it’s what we needed,” joked Pastor Rod Veldhuizen, who led the congregation in prayer.
The service featured multiple songs led by the Halley Family. Despite the thunder and nearly constant rain people huddled under the gazebo or umbrellas to hear the service.

City council funds BID project

The Hill City Business Improvement (BID) Board project will finally move forward.
By a 3-0 vote  at its June 28 meeting the Hill City Common Council approved the project, which includes renovations to Hill City Senior Center, creating additional parking, paving an alleyway and  public restrooms. Four companies bid on the project with the lowest bidder, MAC Construction, being accepted.
